Lets talk tone.

hey, i figured id start a tone thread. just name pedals/amps/guitars/guitarists/companies/private people, whose tones you like or dislike.

ill post much more. but i was watching a video that inspired this thread. and this goes in the worst tone ive ever heard.

I really want to try these pedals.

line 6 (spider) and the word tone don't belong in the same sentence. In my opinion, only a few people can make a line 6 sound good, and the ones that can are likely rich enough that they would never be forced to play one.

Ever since i've stopped using my DS-1, i can't stand most BOSS pedals. The only one i still use is my TU-2.

i have the "burst" version of this pedal. an earlier considered better, some say the best of shawn. it rocks.

those sound good enough lp, certainly enough distortion. the problem i have is when u go over that amount of distortion u lose quality and the individual notes. those sound good though. personally i love lovepedal (hence the name :) because its not high gain and the notes have such clarity it acctually sounds like a driven marshall missing the balls. theyre not as loud and not as punchy. but minus that they have the tone. they have such a great tone. the only problem with those pedals lp is that theyre so damn big id have to build a second pedalboard to fit them! speaking of which i gotta post pics of my new pedalboard. i made a "power source" on it, i made the middle part "take outable" so if im just practicing or going away or going sonwhere where i dont have a lot of space i just take the middle part (my boss dm-2 (the only boss pedal i swear by. best analog delay.) my lovepedal, eq.) the outside part is to house my wah, and every once in a while i stick my chorus somwhere but i took it off because it was too big. anyway its pretty cool ill post pics. :)

@EMB, how many of the boss pedal have you tried and not liked? just curious

i think thats it but im not sure i think i also tryed the eq. the digital delay and the chorus wernt bad. i didnt like any of the distortions.

fair enough, i own the DD-5 (basically the DD-7) and PW-2 which is really rare pedal that's basically fuzz and distortion put together. i personally think you can get some tones of BD-2 too, but that's just me

the only boss i have is a vintage delay. the dm-2. the,yre considered the golden of all analog delays. and its too bad i really love boss' design...

What i mean is, i plug in and whatever i play sounds great. He plugs in, same amp, same settings, even if its same guitar, he gets horrible feedback and every note sounds like s**t, even on his other amps, same thing. I honestly like the spider (which is my amp, he's never touched one. ever.), but it took me 3 months to set it up for a good tone. Anyway, every amp at Guitar center and jammers sounds horrible with him. Peavey, marshal, line 6, fender, etc. Even that guy is a billion times better.

oh, and by the way i do think that first boss pedal is absolutely terrible

I don't think that the Boss Metal Zone 2 or whatever was in the first vid you posted(or link?) was very useful at all. Really, even on the lowest setting it sounded dull and buzzy and waaaay too thick for boosting even.

I'd love to get ahold of a Purple Plexi lovepedal though! oh man, that's hours of fun.

Dudes!!! What's wrong with the MT2? I thought it was quite good. I mean, it's not like a Tube amp/pedal at all (obviously) but I thought it could be useful for particular kinds of music.

I LOVED that Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic thingy. Never heard of it before but it was neat.

As for what I like, all I can think of right now is Jack White's fuzz tones with The White Stripes. He's surely got some skill and knowledge.
Oh, and also Jimmy Page's settings. I don't think he uses many effects and stuff but I Love how he can sound pretty "heavy" and still get very clear, distinguished tones. I try to do that with my amp but never succeed.

I don't like the MT-2 because of the overly distorted tones it produces even at the lowest settings, it isn't exactly useful as it is, it would add too much fuzziness(in a bad way) to most signal chains for boosting, as is if you wanted to play pretty distorted stuff it would work but it doesn't work for my kind of tone(overdriven marshall type)

you sure u watched the right video mici? the first one... its a satic box with overly amounts of gain and absolutly no sustain. its the oposite of what you want. as minimal gain as possible while having sustain. for whatever music. you dont overdo gain bc then it all mushes together.

case: i played a purple plexi. good pedal not amazing. kinda gets too grainy and distorted. id prefer stacking pedals. the eternity's rule.

Opinion. Just depends on what you're going for sound-wise. Like, if you're going for a really dark sound, I mud it up a bit. Stoner metal is all muddy and everything. It still sounds good though [if you like stoner metal lol]. Anyway, I'll try to post a vid of my tone sometime.

to be honest I like Beck's instrumental rendition of "A day in the life", sounds better than the original(IMO, please dont argue!)

I just like to have a gritty kind of "dry" distortion to be honest, I like to use a tad more gain than I would if I was going to try to achieve Eddie Van Halen's VH-1 tone. It's just what I like to use, I agree with Ozz though, the amount of gain used is all dependent on the player, whereas you may like to use minimal gain to achieve sustain, I like to have it nice and crunchy and kind of gritty sounding.
Tone's are highly opinionated for the most part(though I think we all agree that the MT2 didn't sound too musical).

what i ment was the amount of gain for a style. your not gona play slayer or mettallica with no gain. what you do is add enough gain where you get their "effect" whether it be chugging or chorus clean chords, and make sure you have just enough for sustain and solos but not go overboard. a completly muddy sound where you cant hear the notes isnt really liked by many unless i guess its death metal...

Oh, lol. Well in that aspect yeah. I thought you were saying that a little bit of gain and sustain is all any pedal a player would ever need. My bad bro.

nah np i could see how it was mistaken. i just hate when people play with overly amounts of distortion for classics like ozzy sabbath zeppelin hendrix when all they need is barley anything .

Though to be fair, it really depends on the player.

I think crunch is more important that massive amounts of distortion(like Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifiers). I prefer a good crunchy sound over one that makes every single note sound fuzzy and distorted. I like gritty overdrive but not fuzzy, muddy distortion.

I agree. Oh, btw, I'll try to get a vid up tonight of my setup [pretty simple lol. guitar>wah>amp as I don't have a lot of effects yet. I really want a roto-vibe and a talkbox though.]. But yeah, I got some pretty decent tone out of it tonight so I'll post. Anyone else wanna post theirs?

yeah! sure ill post mine.

im acctually doing a lot of "Editing" on my pedalboard. i made it of course, i made the middle thing able to take out, added velcrow a power source. yeah. and also switching out pedals.

yea, i have a pretty simple setup right now too. i running Ibanez hollow body - Boss PW-2 - Boss DD-5 into whatever amp i can borrow. it sounds decent though. but I'm not sure why but i absolutely LOVE this guys tone.

oh, and i really want to get this DMB pedal
