what is the best kind? ive heard a bunch about THD (even though it sounds like a pshycadelic :) and also ultimate attenuator. im working as of now so price doesnt matter as long as its around 300 or less. but honestly im looking for somthing that will NOT

rob my amp of tone
rob my tubes of time
hurt my transistor or transformer w.e

i want somthing that will last too..

well, I'm pretty sure that when you put an attenuator on your amp, if you place it in the logical place you will lose some of your tone qualities. I'm pretty sure that you can compensate for this and add/subtract some with an EQ on the amp or with a pedal.
I don't believe that there is any attenuator that won't rob you of *some* of your tone, just how much is lost.

I've that the Marshall Power Brake and the THD are the two best rated though.

ive heard the THD is, but the marshall power brake is bad news. ive talked to many amp guys and techs and they say that the power break acctually breaks the amp... idk

An attenuator is an electronic device that reduces the amplitude or power of a signal without appreciably distorting its waveform. I don't really that price matters as long as it does what it's supposed to do.

When i had my little borthers hot rod deluxe I was looking at this Ebay Acution Attenuator

Not sure something like that would work for your Marshall.

I thought the purpose of an attenuator was to play at low volumes without loosing tone?

telecrater had it right. An attenuator limits power. I have attenuators in almost all of the equipment that I use.

Hehe, I meant army equipment. Sorry, but none of the attenuators I will will do you any good. You prolly wouldn't even be able to get your amp to chirp with these things.

Tom S (..of horrid 70's band, 'Boston') was a hell of an inventor in his area. he created the (sp?) Scholtz "Power Soak" back in the late 70's, it's all ya want , from what i've read, and highly recommended by pretty much anyone who has laid hands on one(i wore mine out by 1998 or so).

The 'Power Soak' Basically =
a Tube/attenuator "thingy" (i = not a tech) that sits between your head and yer cab "limiting" the VOL while allowing the TONE to remain unscathed (really amazing 'box')
there just one catch...
Ebay
they sell for big bucks now, much like his coveted 'Scholtz Rockman' (pun on walkman)that was intended for headphone-practicing but found its way into a zillion signal chains around 1980.
both = great gear "must haves"
but, like i said....
Ebay

hope that helped

RAWK!
