Recently I broken my wrist, my arm, from my elbow to my knuckle, is in cast, stopping me from playing Guitar.
The Doctor told me to keep moving my fingers, but I cant play Guitar, so I don't know what to do.
Is there anything I can do to keep my fingers moving, and perhaps excersise them for when I can play again.
Any suggestions are great and I thank you for all I get.(If I get any, of course.)
Thank you for reading!

a friend of mine had that happen this year, he's actually recently gotten into his soft cast...I'll ask him about it tomorrow, he also plays guitar.

Ok Thank you
I am only having 1 cast and it's a hard one so I can't do anything in it.
It sucks but when i'm out of it my Guitar will seem so awesome and new and that will be fun.

Become the king of natural and tapped harmonics lol. Or if you can get someone to raise the action for you or if you have an acoustic play some slide.

my friend actually broke his thumb and he had a hard cast for about 3 months, which I can only hope you can bear with... I can barely do without guitar for like 2 weeks!

Well, callouses are going to be gone by the time you can play again, but, finger strength, I think that typing would help keep the stamina up maybe you will lose some speed and bending ability but if you can type for a while it may help keep up the stamina so you don't have to start way way back, only a little behind where you were.

Yeah I still type as much as possible but I am trying to find other things, I tried Guitar Hero but it really hurts after 10 or so mins so I have to stop, I can play on the first 3 strings on my Guitar but nothing more, no chords and no scales, I play sometimes but I just feel like it will make my playing worse when I can play again, so im going to stay away from that as much as possible.
I play playstation sometimes but thats only really my thumb getting exercised.
Also I can't try too much because I am only 13, and when I broke my wrist the growth plate in it slipped out of place, and I am having another X-ray in 2 days, and until then I can't do to much incase it happens again(they put it back in place last week), but after that, perhaps a week or so after, I can try more.
I am quite lucky because if all is good at the X-ray, I will only be in cast for another 3-4 weeks so it wont be so bad for my playing.

Thanks for all the information it has really helped. :)

hey Damien,
You didn't say which arm but i don't suppose it matters much. get a couple of golf balls and roll them around in your hand (both balls in one hand). that will help to keep your fingers moving and loose.
I hope you get out of that cast as soon as possible. And just curious but how did you manage to bust yourself up?

I was on my bike and I sort of fell off, when I was falling, I put my arms out straight, bent back my left wrist(left hand is fretting Hand), then flipped, but when I landed the bike then came down on my left wrist and crushed it into the ground.
I have the chinese pitch ball things(don't know the proper name), and I heard they are good for exercising your hand, I use them sometimes for when I play Guitar, they help alot, so I guess I could try them out.
Thank you for the suggestion I will try them out.

@phip

I may be immature for laughing at that but that got me a little laugh... so lol

@damien
you could also try those therapy balls(the brass ones that ring), I'm superstitious(family roots/heritage) and it may help(though science says "no" I say "It might").

They would help keep your fingers limber and strong as well as give you some pretty noises :)

Josh, wtf, I think he needs real solutions not a lame joke.

On the other hand,if you need to rest, do it, you might damage your fingers more, but if you need exercises try typing, playing easy keyboard or using one of those little machines for finger exercise

In all seriousness, I had a friend with this sort of problem. She plays bass and broke her wrist too. She told me she did roll balls around in her hand to help keep them strong and exercised. She says it wasn't exactly the best alternative she hoped for, but it certainly made sure her strength wasn't back to pathetic when she got to play her bass again. She couldn't move her fingers or thumb a lot though. Alex has good advice, she did find times where she had to rest her hand whenever she began to over work it so just be careful and bear in mind you want it to recover fast.

I hope your arm gets better soon. On the plus side, her wrist is stronger than ever now. Apparently your bones become stronger after you've broken them once so that won't be so bad in the long run I imagine :]

Darn Damien, sad to hear that. I think you should consult doctors or other specialists how you should train that... or atleast ask and tell what you are goin to do, so they can confirm that it not harm damage more. Hope you get well soon m8.

Thanks all for everything you have said.
I am going to look into the pitch ball idea I think it will certaintly help a bit at least.
If I feel like I need to rest it I always do because I want it to recover fast so I can play again I really want to play because I am still learning.
At least I could do some Theory Work until then because I need to because I haven't then, anyone know any sites, or is their any lessons on here?
Thank you again everyone it has helped.

Plenty of lessons (goooood lessons) on this site. Not a bad idea to use the time to study. And as you go along if you have questions be sure to ask. Make the best of your time.

and there's also the "jam" gadget on here, that will help you practice your theory. It will give you a chance to see certain progressions and how to manipulate them, good stuff since you can't actually play the guitar like you normally would.

Well, best of luck!
(and sorry but I forgot to ask my friend today! Tomorrow I will though)
