Okay so I was sat watching TV with some friends the other day (yes, it was an exciting day out for us) when we saw this:
http://current.com/items/88826633_plasticky-goodness.htm
How hard does this look to play compared to a REAL guitar? My friends started going mad, they all thought it was amazing what these guys were doing with these little guitar hero things and thought the players were very talented. But I just wasn't impressed. I mean, the sounds were pretty amazing, I was sort of amazed that you could get a little fake guitar to make these sounds but I thought there was no real talent behind it. I don't know if I was just annoyed that people were making a load of fuss over something that seems so simple in comparison of actually playing a real guitar or what. Just everyone else thought they were actually amazing players, I thought it was just down right lazy to look at colours and press buttons while a connected machine actually changed the notes. Nobody else who was watching this with me was a guitarist, so me and one of them started having a little arguement. She said this actually looks just as if not harder to play then a real guitar, and I argued that anyone who'd played a guitar even once would beg to differ...and we're still argueing! Tell her she's wrong! :P I'm geting some more professional opinions on her! |

Thing is that you cant compare them to real guitars. These are not real guitars, for me they looked kinda funny toys. Idea behind the thing of the video was kinda cool and I think it have great future ahead with party games, but for being a actually "rock star" with these... no.
All depends ofcourse if recording companies start to see possibility of gaining money, future shows, but I personally think that all these things are just for party gamers and hell i think it IS fun actually.
What comes to that are those peoples amazing players or talented?, yes, they are talented and amazing guitarhero guitar players. not guitar players. though i think few of those play guitar for real too. |

ok. for profesional opinions, you came to the right place. lol. I know (Know, not believe) that playing that rock band instrument is easier than actually playing a guitar. And, it offers only 32 combinations, in comparison to an acoustic guitar of 12 frets that offers about 60 combinations or more (i was too lazy to actually do the maths, i started countin, n right after i did, i started sweating) Per fret, and besides, you need to know melody, you cant just play anything n itll sound ok. besides, you require technique, you just cant put your finger over the fret, you need to hold it there, with some strenght there, and constance(lol). besides there are the bends, and for some the hardest part is the coordination between right and left.
But, you need not to worry about it, it does not affact ur playin the fact that theres this fake guitar, theres many points of view. Being the knower of the truth, you can be in peace with yourself. You can trust in the fact that, as the world(n its people) are lazy(with this i mean they will almost always choose the easiest way through) you can assure that there will be less competence for you and your music career, easier. Still, ask the guy with the lil co.. guitar to play asturias. Betcha he cant. And i do.
yet itd be fun to play call n response with someone that actually cant play in a real instrument |

Music theory knocks guitar hero's five buttons out of the water.
Although it is a fun game to play with friends. |

Where is the personal expression? Bending that string just the right amount, holding for just so long? Where is the nuance, the deep emotional connection? Ask your friend if she's like to kiss a robot!
Just like a mother's touch musical expression can NOT be replaced by a machine.

Hehe! Thank you for your profesional opinions guys. I'm talking to her now on MSN and just gave her the link to here, and she's just dropped it now! :P I think Phip's might have got her most! lol
I don't mind playing with them, but when peope start saying it looks more difficult and amzing then playing a real guitar, it annoys me! You just can't compare the two that way. |

i don't know what you guys are complaining about they change the controller. they reprogrammed it to play a selected sound when you press the button/buttons. you would still need to learn music theory to play this thing. they turned It into a midi controller so instead of using a keyboard there using a guitar hero controller. they made it a instrument. but as soy pointed out it is very limited in more ways then just the combinations. hell Bob Moog experimented with tons of different controllers for his snths before settling on a keyboard.
an it would be harder to learn cause you would need a good grasp of theory unlike the guitar(the guitar is harder but if your just a three power chord rocker not so much) that and you would need a very good memory causes more then likely you would need to reprogram it for each song if you change keys/octaves
edit- well it you could make it easier if you program each button to be homophonic but then the caparison above would be the same with power chords. but you can see in the video he didn't do that he got it in monophonic
but any way it shouldn't be seen as a guitar there not the same it is just another midi controller |

i actually think this is pretty cool, i mean im NOT saying its guitar, but its something different and experimental

real guitar is way easier than guitar hero for me, but ive only played it a couple times so thats probably why |

well, i just dont see the difference. As known "three powerchord rocker" I know just as much theory that is needed for these things. I press this button when I want this scale for this chord progression because its an controller that do a combination for desired situation by pressing button/buttons.

very true.

i didn't mean to knock any one the illusion i was trying to get across was the people who learn just power chords and play smoke on the water(not that it's a bad song and it's four chords) for hours on end and that is it without giving the guitar the respect it deserves. which is to be smashed Who style |

LOL I just remembered that King of the Hill episode when John Redcorns band starts playing then they cut off the power and all you could hear was picking.
What I love about guitar is that its a real instrument and acoustic always rules. |

Haha! I love King of the Hill! I totally forgot about that episode, just had a slight over reaction of a laughing fit when I read league's post! :')
Okay so ther might still be music theory involved with this guitar hero band thing. But there's no real soul in it, once they've programmed it into the computer it's like they can just mess about with buttons and wave them around to alter the sound. I don't think it's the same as really being in focus and playing real guitar live infront of an audience. I mean don't get me wrong they might still have to focus a little, but I don't see how this could possible compare with the real soul of a guitar. |

Guitar builduing, designing, and playing is an art.
Midi controllers are alright but nothing beats organic rock where playing is more important than programming.
Changing strings and intonation setup. All that good stuff would be gone.
Even if its three power chords, which a good musician could make a good song out of.
Midi is just giving into machines before they rise against us.LOL |

Well, ive been doing some with midis and real time effects with computers and I like the way where the development is going. IK multimedia forexample made great things with their softwares.
@RA
haha, it would be cool when someone doing history by smashing or burning guitarhero instruments onstage XD. |

i made one of those once for my friend with a guitar hero controller, guitar pro and a bit of scripting :) was pretty good but the only problem is that they cant have many notes even with button combinations. with logic you could really make a really cool instrument. anyways as a whole band imo its a little sad... |
