Does anyone else suffer from profectionistism?

I'm not sure if that is really a word. But are you such a protectionist that you never get any thing done?

I am and it's been getting pretty bad. I love recording and composing but I'm not getting anywhere.

I've got this song I've had for a long time and this weekend I worked on the into for it. It's about 20 bars or so. I got to the point where i was almost happy with it when i checked my drive and realized the location where my audio files are saved at was sitting and about 2 gigs. I use Cuabse and it does save all the takes but still 2 gig's.....and it only took me 8-10 hours to get this far.

I think i need a 12 step program or something....anybody else

I'd advise you to take a break with some songs you're working on, leave it for a few weeks while you mess around with something else, then come back and listen to it, and see how you feel about it.


But just remember that the artist will rarely be satisfied with one's own work.

If I record and it get bad, but i got feeling "I can do better" then i record that again.

If the take go bad, but i got feeling "mmm, its allright." i continue and finish the song. After that you can fix part you think you can do better.

btw, in cubase there is a pool -> empty trash, that you can clear every unused recordings from that song to save HD space. anyway, it sometimes a buggy and you should do that immediately when you are not goin to save recordings you recorded.

To an extent. If I get pissed because I can't nail something, I just go do something else, take my mind off of it, and usually I come back and nail on the first or second take. I agree with what Jazz said basically. I'm not really that bad of a perfectionist though.

Yeah, I suffer too. Thing is I wouldn't want to put anything out there that I knew I hadn't done my best on. Soooooo there is a whole bunch of stuff I haven't put "out there". I think it's important to work a song until you can play it through perfectly before you release it or even if you never release it. What you are doing Tele is breaking the bad habits and mistakes and replacing them with good solid playing and that can only lead to consistent quality playing in the future. Keep at it and you will play pefectly all the time. It's the hard road I know but it is worth the frustration.

Phip your the man! You always seem to have something positive to say about any situation, I have noticed even your criticism comes across in a good way. Just felt like throwing that out there.

Yea I have the same problem. I have been working on a progression all night but just can't find what I'm feeling on the guitar. I just logged on to take a break. Also my two year old slapped the head stock on my guitar and the end of the high E string slashed his finger open. That will end a jam really quick.

it matters i guess. in things i love, i care soooomuch and am the ultimate perfectionist. but with school, things i dont care for, i dont give a damn, and it shows.
