I can't say much about this "before" time.
But for me the only reason I joined was because this site offered some really nifty tools. I use it when I am at work, and when I read a lesson by Jazz about some quiz I figured this was apearantly a forum with usefull exercises.
I have since let go of this delusion and use it to kill some time at work. |

This topic shows up every so often. Obviously it has some folks concernced. Just looking at the last 10 topics we have.....
1) this topic
2) a question about a chord name
3) topic about a famous musician
4) topic about a famous song intro
5) question about using "angry" chords
6) metallica
7) topic concerning acoustic techniques
8) topic about someone having a problem with technique
9) topic about gear
10) another topic about gear.
Some people think that most members log on to joke around and goof off (and for a very, very limited number that may be true) but i believe that is an unfair view of the forum. a member might spend several hours practicing and using the tools on the site and then take a break and engage in some harmless "chit chat" and then return to practicing. All you are seeing is the "chit chat" part of that person's routine. It is an unfair characterization.
Once again the argument can be made that if you don't like the "chit chat" don't read it. Seek out the technical and informative topics and respond to those. Hell, even Einstein engaged in the occasional humorous quip!
Many of us in the U.S. just spent the entire Thanksgiving holiday with family. We all know just how diverse and sometimes enfuriating some family members can be! This is a huge international family. to assume you are the only person here who takes music seriously is a bit on the arrogant side.

@Joe,
The reference is to a former recent member who felt he was superior in every way to all the other members of the forum. I have read some of your posts and find a similar attitude regarding your music knowledge. You posted some very, very good lessons and seem to have a solid knowledge of music. I envy you. If I had 1/100 of your apparent ability I would be thrilled to share it with others. But for personal reasons you decided to remove your lessons from the site. The implication is that the membership was not “worthy” of your knowledge. Do you have any idea how many people log on to this site every day? The number is enormous! This number far exceeds the number of members logging on to the forum. So, there are thousands of people from all over the world benefiting from the tools and lessons on this site. You were helping people you weren't even aware of with your lessons. Credit goes to the administration for a fantastic job in putting this site together and the talented members who are willing to share their knowledge with others. I personally look at the lessons and am grateful for them and the effort that goes into posting lessons. So, just because there seems to be a small number of replies to the lessons does NOT mean that people are not benefiting from them. Sadly for us you decided to remove your lessons. But, that is your decision to make. How then can you complain about the quality of forum discussions when you have removed good information from the knowledge base? My hope is to someday improve to the point where I will also be able to share useful information with the group. Do you post for compliments or for the sheer joy of enlightening others?

Yeah, I may be old and senile but the personal attack falls on deaf ears. It's demeaning to the conversation.
Some of you are missing the point that in spite of some seemingly useless “chit” ‘chat” there is a lot of education going on here. Don’t overlook the “big picture”.

Look guys, people like me have been to PLENTY of forums and i've seen them collapse because of idiotic situations like this. ESPECIALLY the UG forum which I used to use. Can't we just agree on one system instead of a whole debate. I'm starting a poll. |

Phip's right. The forum is basically for people to "chit-chat" while taking a break, the point in the website is to practice using the other activities on this website. The forum is here for when you're stuck, but it's also here to take a break and enjoy yourself every now and then.
We can be friends! Instead of merely being associates using each other for useful information, there's no harm in joking about things every now and then. Don't you agree?

Doz hasn't fully left, though he sees no point in participating in some of the things that are being said in this forum. Same with GB and Deefa. They're still around, just not commenting. |

The reason I took them down was because while I intended to help people, I was getting adds on MSN from people who were only learning from online resources. And trying to substitute me as a teacher, which is not good for anyones development.
Also it wasn't a personal attack, it was a jab. |

Yay! We're all hippies here so it seems! (apart from Skold that is)
Joe, about those MSN people bothering you that I'm sure has to be annoying. I can understand that. But if you really want to keep posting lessons up here well then don't allow people to gain access to your adrerss, if they get it ignore them, if someone PMs you here over that too often they're just taking the mick ignore them, don't add them and last of all if you really need your email displayed (I've never posted a lesson so I'm not sure) use one you won't really use. It's a shame when people take so much advantage of someone trying to help a little like that.
(By the way people, please don't hate me! I know I said 'ignore them' an awful lot, but I'm not anti-social! Okay?) |

Haha I don't think anyone will think badly of the chicken, don't worry.
I don't mind talking and explaining things about the music and guitar, so I don't mind adds from people, as far as I'm concerned everyone is always free to contact me about it which is why I let my mail be displayed in the first place. The point was I don't feel online resources should ever be used as a substitute for far better tools to develop. From the adds and questions I was getting I gathered it was being used as a substitute and not as a complimentation to teachers and books which is how I intended it. |

I guess I'm as guilty as anyone about the useless chit chat. I really do enjoy the questions about music because I can learn from pretty much everyone on this site. But it is somewhat annoying when a topic goes from a legitimate topic to senseless rabble. I do think there is a happy medium though. Maybe we could leave our senseless rabble in the general chat area and our questions in all the other ones. I think that's fair to everyone. |
