I reading a lot about zakk looking at his style of playing and if I am right he uses pentatonic and blues with the odd passing note. I went onto Youtube and could not get over how many people slate him for using the pentatonic scale. Many great guitar player use this scale I mean from Jeff Beck, Dave Murray, Tony Iommi and other as well.
Love this comes from the heart

My question is do you think that zakk wylde is over rated as a player?
Or what do you think of his playing style using just a few scales?

I think he is an iconic guitarist. I mean to use just a few scales and make all the great music that he does, thats simply amazing to me. And he is one of the most soulfull guitarists you can possibly find. |

He's far too overrated. His stuff sounds cool, and sometimes simplicity can sound amazing. But to call him a "guitar god" and "the best modern guitarist" is way over the top.
His mind is limited, and he doesn't venture off and try to understand everything about music. He could create a number of cool pieces if he just tried. His melodic phrases are good and show potential but he's still very much a student of music. |

*shrug* Hendrix was a pentatonic player too.
A musician is a musician, there are just different styles. Going into better or worse means you should sit at the benches for a while longer.
Can I play Hendrix? Yeah, could he play me? No, does that make me a better guitarist? No, people are different. He had different things to express and pentatonic was what he needed to express it.
What someone used to express themselves does not take away from what they are expressing, as long as they truly devoted themselves to it. |

People that say that he is overrated haven't listened to absolutely every song he has ever recorded, from his demo tape he sent to ozzy, to pride and glory, to book of shadows, to mafia, to his new stuff with ozzy. This guy can play absolutely anything.
Before you over or under rate anyone's work, listen to it, research it, or you'll sound like an idiot. He is a skilled banjo, acoustic guitar, piano, mandolin, and electric guitar player, the fact that he has so many disciplines sets him apart from a lot of modern day guitarists. His skills really don't show through in BLS or Ozzy IMO, you can see it elsewhere though. And he doesn't just use pentatonics, he uses a lot of major/minor, finger picking and tons of chromatic stuff. I think maybe he is overrated, but not as a musician, maybe an electric guitar player. |

Not really, I've listened to his stuff. I still stick with my opinion. He's still a student of music. As we all are. No one is the "guitar god" or "greatest". You would only be the greatest if you knew everything and could play anything and play exactly what the musian wanted. No one is that good because no one knows everything about music, there is no end. |
