Is an epiphone les paul worth it?

ok, epiphone les paul custom, like 900 australian dollars. its only my second electric guitar so is it worth getting or saving for like another 3 years to reach 4,000? for a gibson

what guitar do you have now, instead of getting a custom, try out a standard, vs. a custom vs a plus top, try more than one, all guitars have diff sounds some shit and some gr8.

If you get a good one.

if your guitar right now is completely awful, the epi les paul will be a step up. but, once you become good, you will really want a gibson les paul, so keep saving after you get it...

if you score a tip top good one, it'll be a decent instrument, if it's not that lucky, it'll be a mediocre instrument. hint: epiphone pickups benefit GREATLY from being potted. no kidding. just do it.

I wouldn't save no $4,000 for a Gibson. Personally, I would go for an Alembic Skylark, Rickenbacker 330, or a Gretsch G5122.

If you like Les Pauls go for it. I would suggest a good amp instead.

True. A good amp can be the difference between a guitar that sounds great, and one that sounds ok.

Buy it. What I usually do is when I buy and Epiphone crap, I'll put stock Gibson pickups in it, and put a decal on the headstock.

you're not going to get the gibson fretboard though, which is in my opinion the best part of a real gibson.

unless you replaced the neck too... and then the body... and the bridge... and the pots... and the wires...

the Gibson fretboard, neck, neck joint (nobly SG) is one of the best no doubt. i can't only recommend a epi if it's your first guitar and your smart enough to skip the beginning crappy guitar bullshit.

Only thing I don't really like about Epiphone is the inconsistent quality.

it's comes from the overall design of the les pual and Sg while it is a great design it works horrible for mass production you really need one skilled builder to make it. that's why fender has much better quality at a lower price it's designed for it. so people who don't have 2,500 to 4,000 to shell out for a guitar (like ME) will get a much better fender for 1,500 (though i got mine on clearance for 800 suckers it's a tele) through i was looking at getting a strat deluxe (clearance shopping time) due to the fact new jazzmasters suck and you need to get a vintage one and then you better of with a gibson

Well, I'm more of a Tele man anyway. I would rather have a lower quality Epiphone with a great amp than just a higher quality Gibson.

I forgot to mention replace the bridge and the nut. Also, make sure the neck has not dead spots because its a huge bitch to fix them.

that's a good point; gibson style guitars are more difficult to build then fender style guitars... so you REALLY are making a smart move by paying a professional craftsman in gibsons employ to make it, instead of a line factory.

it is true amps make a huge difference but unless you over drive or use vast amount of effects to your music to make it udder shit, the guitar can be a make or brake move.

now remember this is coming form a devote Avant-garde listener (but i would rather like to take a john cale approach but with a bit more Sun Ra) so i feel it holds some, but then again egos are a double edged sword

i wouldn't say it's more difficult to build (besides the dove tail) but the thought process is best suited for different way. and no Gibson style should be on any line and that's largely how epi goes about it (i think i can safely think that certain tasks at the USA Gibson factory is lined like rough cuts for one on a ban saw).

the amp, pickups, guitar quality, and playing are all about 25% of your tone each. that's how i look at it...

well at the moment ive got a stoopid fender squire and its an epiphone les paul custom which i thought was like one of teh best kinds of les pauls??

Have you considered a Gibson SG? You'll get a pretty decent one for £450 which is roughly the same as your $900 and regarding tone you'll not notice a huge difference to a Les Paul. You'll also have the ease of access advantage's of a double cutaway.

he could get a gibson SG faded... those are made with equivalent parts to a epiphone, but slightly better worksmanship... or a gibson melody maker for less, but i've heard awful things about those.

You say better worksmanship, but what about the pickups? I remember that you prefer a different type of pickups than the ones that come with Gibsons.

What's the best? (might save up)

i like their 57 classic and classic plus humbuckers, i don't like their alnico ones, 495R or something. i think the very best humbuckers are the seymour duncan JB in the bridge and 57 in the neck.

Im goin to buy a Epiphone SG tomorrow, worn cherry. I recently went local store and tested 2 hours Epiphone and gibson SG. Im not sure if that Gibson SG was standard one but anyway. I used zoom g1 and epiphone sounded much better in that than gibson one especially in octaver effect.

Also in gibson it has very sturdy or "thick" neck that not just fit my hand, but Epiphone was a pleasure... Just cant wait tomorrow ^_^

yes, i had those pickups in a HH fender jaguar that was fucking stolen. i'm still pissed about that.

no. my bandmate has a les paul traditional, and there is no chance in hell of him using fender.

no, i have brainwashed myself, so that the gibson SG-3 stimulates every pleasure center in my brain - sexual pleasure, societal pleasure, feeding pleasure, defecation pleasure. it's literally a endorphin button for me. it gets me hard, and makes my mouth water, and makes me feel accepted. i don't think it's reversible.
