I thought I'd see who was playing in a band and who was not.
Also if you are in a band how did you all meet your band mates? |

A friend and I have been playing as a two-piece with "guests" for the past year and a half. He and his family recently moved to Washington state, so that kind put "The Last Time" on hiatus for a while. It's actually quite a difficult situation, though you could say it has given him the prototypical rocker childhood: Unstable family, death of his father just 2 years ago, substance abuse problems. They left here just this Friday and that was the first time I can remember myself crying since my high school football team lost the state championship (abstract fact).
We kind of had a Lennon/McCartney thing going on... maybe more of a Page/Plant dynamic-he's much more of an outward people person whereas I'm more of a quiet introvert. That really over-answered the question, didn't it? |

I was in a band with a now close group of friends, who I met when somebody told me they were looking for a guitarist. We prepared a few songs for a talent show, and then it went downhill afterwards when we invited a second guitarist into the band. I was just starting to break into my own style, which didn't really accommodate a second guitarist, and also this new guitarist was into metal and cranked his Digitech Death Metal stompbox all the way up. This band was definately not a metal band. This was my Junior year.
Senior year we reformed with a new drummer and a new second guitarist. Unfortunately, even though this new guitarist was a great friend of mine, we had trouble cooperating. By this time, I had already found my jazzy/bluesy niche, and many of the songs I wrote still didn't allow for a second guitar part without muddying the composition. Of course, my friend had no rhythm, he was just madly good at soloing (In the styles of Angus Young, Richie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, etc). This band also quickly disintegrated, and we found another guitarist to fill in for him. This new guitarist, was a blues monster, and so he quickly turned every song we had into a blues song or Hendrix song. This wasn't the direction I was really looking to take, so I jumped ship with the songs I had written and now I just jam with whoever is interested. |

I'm ALMOST in a band.
Me and my friend are working on getting one going, we just need a drummer, but we are having no luck finding one right now.
Maybe someday we'll get it going...
Til then, I still keep writing my own songs, but at least I'm getting a head start. |

Sounds like you've had quite a few problems there foogered. I've never actually been in a "band" (writing songs, as opposed to covers) with another guitarist and I have always been against it. It works fine with your faster and heavier kinds of metal, but in most blues, rock, or otherwise it kind of makes everything muddy. I have jammed with other guys, some of them being professionals, and some who think they're professionals. The guys who are actually good are quite fun to play with and know where their limits are and how much room to leave the other guys. The people that think they're good tend to really step on the other guys' toes and I can get pretty agitated. I know they're probably not doing it on purpose, so I don't really become angry, but it's still very annoying. |

I was kind of in he same boat, I started playing guitar but then changed to the bass to get in a band. There are more opportunity if you play bass.
I was in a grunge band that broke up after graduation from high school. Then played in another grunge band. we never got off the ground because of drugs and asshole musicians who think they were already rocks stars. that 2nd band mutated to an acoustic rock band. again asshole musicians who thought they all ready rocks stars. Same guy and you think i would have learned. I have been playing to the wall for the last several years.
I have auditoned for some "rock" bands that were no more that left overs from the 80's. I'm not int that kind of music.
So i have been looking lately thinking about getting something going either on bass or guitar it does not really matter. I was approached online buy some local outlaw country outfit. I think that might be fun or different.

Yeah, we have a band with friends of mine. Band was born in local pub and got idea from our Bass player and he never played any instrument.
Luckily he is a bit natural wicked rythm talent so its been easy to teach him basics. Our drummer is really good, which made it easy to me jump in. We dont play covers and we have hell fun everytime we play. Best thing ive done for many years :P
We did few gigs in a private parties, there been plan that we made our first pub gig in next year. |

Mine just had it's second practice, you can hear a sample of it on our myspace. If you don't like metal I wouldn't bother giving us a listen though.

It's pretty sloppy, but went pretty good for our second practice. This is my first band, and everything is going surprisingly well, we are all really good friends already, we just need another guitarist, and we need to get a lot better! |

I am, played a good few times now. We all have a laugh, but we also understand the importance of practice. Just recently though, we're progressing a lot more, getting a lot better. |

I'm just trying to improve a little bit more then find some guys of an equal skill level that don't hate the music I play, like I would play in a band with my buddy Kyle who's intense as fuck at every instrument I've seen him play but he hates just about everything I like, so we'd have to play all his stuff which is amazing but beyond my skill to play |

I'm not at the moment no. But I was good with the Chromatic harmonica in the toneof C alone at a point where my freinds wanted me for a music class asset in a temporry band. I'm soon returning to 'Junk' where a large group of us play, guess what? Old junk! (because we are with REAL instruments!)
Here we were playing at the town hall, I was particularly good playing the tuna can! : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m8rxWGeLRz8
And yup, this video was recorded on a mobile phone but you can hear it okay, the camera footage is better. I can't wait to re-group into the real Junk band :) |

Thrash Metal is nearly dead in my area. I dont like to work with Grindcore, Deathcore, Metalcore,(have played in bands like these) and all that growling stuff. Everybody uses LPs or Ibanez, nobody wants to shred, everyone has emo or short hair, mosh pits suck ass now, and nearly everyone has some low tuning that sounds like mud. |

Same here. Nickelback LOL. WTF led white people to Rap or Hip Hop anyways. I know of some Blacks who disagree with whites listening to "Their Music" What happenned to people learning how to play guitar(besides us) and having a good ol Rocking time. I can never party to Hip Hop. If I was having sex and a Hip Hop song started playing I'd truly stop. Maybe I could party to Rap, MAYBE. |
