3 note coil example in F major (ascending)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------3---3-5
-----------------------------------------------3---2-3-2-3-5-3-5--5---
---------------------------2---2-3-2-3-5-3-5--5----------------------
------------1---1-3-1-3-5--5----------------------------------------
-1-3-5-3-5--5------------------------------------------------------
and continues until you move though the whole F major scale, then descends.

sry about the sloppyness, the website keeps changing my tab
but explained- basicly you are moving up the scale but doing a willy wonka style stepping when he's going down the stairs "sorry for the reference it's what I see when ever i play it."
and their are no cords they are single notes... though this website wants to make it look like they are played together... they are not. |

It's new to me but looks like a good exercise I'll give it a try. |

I think that exercise is called 'the spider'. I've seen it once before but I can't remember where. I'll see if I can dig it out. |

I do a bit of some of that. Recently I've forgotten about it and left it out of my routine. Might put it back in, they're one of the more fun exercises. |

its called a sequence as far as I have ever heard. You can use 2,3,4,5,6 or 7 notes, or you can do it by octaves even. I use to use them in practice but I get bored with them real quick so I don't do them much. |

Yeah, I use this as a warm up and playing technique. Thats how I play most of the Major or Whole tone Scales. I think "Spider" refers to "Spider Chords" technique used by Dave Mustaine. Believe it or not, I tried it myself without knowing it was invented :D |

Tried the spider chords or the thing we're no about here? I tried what we're on about here (be them coils or whatever) knowing what they were too. |

Spider chords are where instead of only forming power chords with your 1&3 fingers you also use 2&4 to make power chords on higher frets and different strings causing less stress on your wrist. |

I was wrong. The 'spider' exercise I was thinking about can be found here:-
http://www.justinguitar.com/en/TE-002-TheSpider.php
It's a PDF file so you'll have to down load it yourselves, but it's well worth the effort, a real 'killer'! |

I still don't understand what the spider/coil exercise is?
Congrats, you've found something I don't know the answer to, well done for putting me in my place!

lol, the spider exercises are easy... I think coils are a lot tuffer if you stay in scale, and specially when you get to 4-5 note coils |

Actually league, it's like the third or fourth. Infact, I'm beginning to think he's human just like everyone else, just with a slightly inflated ego ;). |

Nice one Doz, got the nail right on the head there haha!
Yeah, a lot of people say I sound really arrogant when it comes to music and knowledge of it. I don't mean to be, but I just love to talk about it, it's something that I am completely obsessed with and want to always know more. My general aim is to know more than anyone about Music, so you can fathom that's quite ambitious to begin with!
Anyway, I still don't think anyone's answered my original question about coils/spiders.
Oh, and to Undying, I've never noticed that irony before, but you're right, it does seem pretty daft...

The exercise being discussed in this thread is basically:
Play the same amount of notes on each string. You play two notes, then go back oa note, then play two notes from that position, then go back a note, then two notes from that position and so on until you've done every string, and then the same back up. I suppose it's commonly applied to scales... or sometimes only having 2 notes per string. |

Oh when I say playing out the scale, I mean it continues all the way down the fret board.. You don't just go down one position and back up... you go down all the scales then back up though the whole scale. I'll have to post it in the lesson thing for exercise, I'll use F major since it starts at position I ^_^ |

I suppose you could choose a pattern or a whole scale or whatever. |
