Yeah, Nirvana are ok, but they are a bit overrated. Check out Soundgarden and Pearl Jam - they are similar to Nirvana, but better :). Some people think that Nirvana "created" the grunge style, but Soundgarden formed in the mid 80s, and along with bands such as Green River (who went on to form Pearl Jam) and the Melvins (who were a big influence on Nirvana), they created the grunge style, which was then popularised by Nirvana with "Teen Spirit". When Nirvana broke through into the mainstream, they brought bands like Soundgarden, the recently formed Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains with them. |

yeah, I like Nirvana alot, though there aren't like many, many songs I like from them. Anyway, there a few songs that are very hi rated in my own charts: Smells like teen spirit, rape me, heart shaped box, ma who sold the world, sliver......
Sorry Chris, but I can't comment what you said, I don't know anything about the bands you were talking about. I've heard people talk about Pearl Jam many times, but never actually heard a song from them. |

I think by commiting suicide Kurt Cobain sealed Nirvana's popularity for future generations. I'm not saying he did it for this reason, but when you listen to Chris Cornell from Soundgarden (and then Audioslave, and now a solo artist) or Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, Kurt Cobain just pales in comparison. So I find it weird that of all the grunge bands, Nirvana are the only one people have heard of. Layne Stayley of Alice In Chains also died in 2002, but that was long after grunge had left the mainstream, and Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone died in 1990, just a year before it hit the mainstream. Soundgarden did a collaboration with the remaining members of Mother Love Bone (who went on to form Pearl Jam)in 1990 to make an album called "Temple Of The Dog" which didn't sell well, until they re-released it a year later, after Nirvana hit the charts. Pearl Jam released the album "Ten" in 1991, which has gone on to sell 12 million copies in the US, compared to "Nevermind"'s 10 million in the US.
I was watching a documentry about Cobain a few months ago and in that they were talking about Soundgarden and how they were fronting this new wave of alternative rock that was gonna hit the mainstream, and how much of a surprise it was that it was actually Nirvana who did it.
Check out wikipedia for info on the bands. I personally recommend buying the album "Superunknown" by Soundgarden. |

I think Superunknown and Badmotorfinger are the best albums to listen to if you haven't heard Soundgarden before. Ultramega OK was their first album, and its quite hard to get into if you haven't listened to Soundgarden before. It's good, but not as accessable. You could also buy A-Sides, which is a compilation of most of their best songs. It leaves a few great songs off, but its the quickest way of hearing Soundgarden over their 13 year existance rather than buying every album. |

the BBC programme "Seven Ages Of Rock" features Alternative Rock tonight (the 23rd), at 9pm (i think) on BBC2. So, if you live in the UK, and like some of the bands meantioned above you might wanna check it out. It's repeated tommorow night (the 24th) at 11pm ish on BBC1. If you live elsewhere then it'll probably appear on youtube in a few days.
It's a pretty good series, but they seem to miss loads of things out. I suppose it's kinda hard to mash down 50 odd years of rock music into just 7 episodes (Blues-rock, Art-rock, Punk, Heavy Metal, Stadium Rock, Alternative Rock and Indie). Also, like in the metal episode, for example, it started out with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, went on to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and then glam metal, and then Metallica. No meantion of any of the other 3 big thrash bands (Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer), and no meantion of anything that happened after Metallica released the black album in 91. No meantion of post thrash/groove metal, nothing on nu metal (probably not a bad thing!). Its like the world stopped dead in 91. :| |

Nirvana is decent. As one of the forum metalheads though I'm siding with AIC. They're putting out a new album out soon with their new vocalist. He'll never be as good as Layne, but still, JERRY CANTRELL!! lol. |

this is a long dead topic revived haha.
nirvana was over-played. i like nirvana, but they arent the best band in the world as some people make them out to be.
on a side note; has anyone heard Chris Cornell's new album, Scream?
It's weird as hell, but I'm kind of digging it. It's produced by a hip hop artist, so it's definitely a departure from rock. |

I've heard bits of it, and it sounds horrible! Even worse is the sudden flux of people on facebook saying how much they love "Chris Cornell - Scream" or even worse "Timbaland - Scream"! |

yeah, but you got to understand he's not doing it for the money. he's done the rock thing for a good twenty years, so he's just trying something different. i dunno, everyone has their own taste, but the album has definitely grown on me. |

Yeah, I agree that he's not doing it for the money. It just sounds empty, what I've heard on youtube so far anyway. |

Learn "Lithium." Its easy and fun to play. Really all you're gonna be doing when playing Nirvana is power chords. |

And very easy single note riffs. Why? Kurt only took lessons for three months before basically saying, I'm good at this. He made great hooks, but good? Not close. |

You don't need amazing technical ability to pen great hooks. Just vision and creativity.

Thats what I meant. Vision and creativity is what he had. That doesn't happen to everyone. Anyone can play technically. |

I think Rolling Stone listed Cobain as nine on their greatest guitar players list. It, needless to say, made me sick. Then again, they do usually side with sentiment as opposed to... substance? |

I understands that people like Nirvana, but sometimes its so depressing. I like "smells like teen spirit" and "come as you are" tough:P |
