Good scales to do some Improvisation on

Lets name some scales that usually sound good in general when you improvise on.

Of course, there is the A Pentatonic Blues scale, always sounds good with improvisation, but if you know any other scales good for this stuff, post it here.

Natural minor, harmonic minor

A good scale to improv over? One that fits the chord change.

This is kinda a dumb question (no offense) because if the progression is lets say c#m Bm, Amaj7 G# you could use a c# harmonic minor, however it fits there. If your doing something else it may fit. The amswer is whatever fits.

How do you know what fits to what chord? Well thats theory, however once you know theory dont stay in the confines of it (i know ill get yelled at on here if i say only use your scales) but if you fully dont know them and dont know how to improv without going outta key, how are you gonna improv going outta key? So learn your theory.

To be honest i guess playing along with the question i love using diminished scales/arrpegios/licks. Adds flavor when it fits.

Be careful when telling people they have dumb questions, even though I know you didn't mean anything by it. Comments like this can turn people off of music, which can seem quite overwhelming at first. OP may just have a limited music knowledge base and is just learning and seeks help and not to be told their questions are unfounded.

This is not an attack on EMB, who is a good guy who always adds quality to this forum and community, but more of a generic observation about people in general. :o)

I usually play in the key of A or C. (Very rarely I'll do D)
If I have a loop going I'll solo in the corresponding Key,

if there's no loop/rhythm guitar, I'll switch keys every 5 seconds.

I recently felling totally love to D minor scale. Heres the very sweeet backing track to jam on and practise D minor. try it :)

There are no questions that are less than very important questions... if there is need for knowledge behind question.

i really like phrygian dom. it extends dom 7 chords to b9 its the 5th mode of harmonic minor i always use this one lick when i play the miles davis tune all blues. oh and the dorian mode is one of my faves to use over minor 7 chords.

i like to try and play "out" alot. like cromatic tritones and what my bud likes to call "stoner licks". alot of the time it doesn't work but im figuring out that i can play **ed up licks over the V chord and it works alot of the time.

i guess as far as keys/progressions to play over i really like Bb blues(form) and A Major, G Major. but i would like to start working more with the flat side of the circle of fifths more.

Use a pentatonic, and you'll be fine no matter what.
