Pickup Heights

Hi people, does anyone know a good pickup height for a good tone? I am on a quest for tone (and I have been for the month) Thanks in advance =)

I have mine at exaclty 3/457 inches from the bottoms... (sarcasm)

No just play around, whatever sounds best...

But a quest for tone... Hmmm What amp u have? changing your pickup hight will do next to nothing if you have a sub par guitar and amp

I have an umbranded 10 wat starter amp, but am probsbly getting a new line 6 soon

step 2 describes it quite well. But you should plug into a good amp to really hear the details of the tone. On a small amp your sound on distortion will probably be quite hard to define.

I keep my bridge just off of the string. And my neck just above the pickup ring (cleaner tone).
This way i can leave my amp on full distortion and just use volume/pickup for distortion control.

The problem is, that my neck pickup sound soooooo muddy, and my middle sounds sooooooo tinny, no matter how much i ajust the pickups

Honestly the amp is the problem.... Chaning the pickups will be minimal if you have a starter amp...

Agreed...when you can get a better amp, that's when changing the height and pickups themselves will be noticeable, but until then it doesn't matter what set of pickups you have, they will pretty much all sound like crap through a starter amp.
I had to play my Dean V through my cousin's little starter amp when I bought it(it's hard to bring a 112 amp as carry on these days xD) and it has a pretty solid set of pickups: DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and a DiMarzio Super PAF in the neck...through the amp both sounded terrible.

So what are the best amps for a price lower than £100, or $125 or whatever? I can't afford an effects pedal so I also need distortion with the amp. Thanks for the help so far people =)

Save up for something a little more expensive. or go to a local pawn shop or something. I saw a Marshal MG15fx for 70 bucks. but they are only $150 new, which isnt too far out of your range
