I dont think the question is speed VS feeling, its more; can you control your speed and focus your feeling.
If you can master speed then its a great tool to use when a song calls for it but never at the expense of feeling, feeling should permeate every note whether its a hammered for a millisecond in a 16th triplet or held and sustained with a gentle vibrato for an entire measure.
more than anything its about context; if you can pull it off and make the musicians around you sound good while doing it than anything goes.
Sometimes I feel like walking and sometimes I feel like running. Is one BETTER than the other. I'll answer. No.
My daughter is now four. I watched her learn to sit, then stand, walk, and then run! She would trip at each phase as she went from one to the other. Now, she can do whatever she feels.
@harley: best post of the topic!
fast playing has it's place as well as slow playing. playing at hyperspeed constantly is an illusion of musical proficiancy. i think thats the problem with "shred". and sometimes that music is so fast and so distorted you can't even hear the notes. i'd prefer my guitar not to sound like a bumblebee.
I think you have a bit of both, feeling is more impotent. Tom Morrello side he that he came up with it his style of playing becuz of the "speed race".
To sum things up, if you want to be fast go for it, if you want to play music DON'T BE LIKE THIS GUY. its just showing off... jump to the last min of the video

^^ nobody will ever attain the technical prowess of mab,but he puts his heart and soul into playing what he plays,i would much rather listen to mab than some mainstream garbage,is he on the top 40 list? you kbow why? because he is an artist, not a robot who spits out git sobgs that the people eat up bcuz of catchy lyrics, and for you to tell people not to play like him but llay like the other guy is asinine, everybody should play how they want to play, and not worry about being called souless for playing to fast or a bad guitarist for playibg too slow, every plays there own way and nobody should hate on other peoples music for any reason bcuz if you dnt like it dont effin listen!

@neomass and you know what ill show off if i damn well please i put alot of work into perfecting my chops and ill be damnd i let someone make me feel weird about shredding for feel of being called souless...
Good for you Shredder-san. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for playing what you want. You should have no feel of being called soul-less.
I should know...I like Gary Numan and Kraftwerk, Iron Maiden and even hip-hop and I know they could be considered soul-less; but they are my things that I enjoy.
It is assumed here that we are not going to be offended by critical statements of things we hold dear to our hearts. It's really hard to say anything opinionated if we have to be worried about offending fans of whatever we are critical of.
I have also found, in my many years on this earth, that the things I hate the most at first, are sometimes the things I end up liking the most later on.
And yes, others have the technical prowess of MAB...no need to call people asinine. That's not improving the dialog, you know?
