Stock Strings

Are the stock strings on a guitar any good? I know people told me to replace the strings on my super beginner Squier bundle pack, but I just got a new toy (will post pics soon) and wonder if the stock strings are usually not that good or if it is just because that was a bundle pack model. Thanks.

Well... do the strings sound good? If they don't get rid of them and put something else on. If they do, keep'em on and keep buying them when they go bad.

I replace my strings every 2-3 weeks while giving the fretboard a nice rubdown with some oil. That keeps the guitar in great shape and always sounding fresh and new.

The importance here is how it SOUNDS... doesn't matter what you are using to make that sound.

Thanks for the heads up Jeff. I only asked because someone told me before that the strings that came with the bundle pack guitars were really just place holders to avoid the neck warping and I wasn't sure if that was standard for all guitars or just cheaper guitars. They do sound fine to me, so I'll just keep them on then! Thanks again!

um.. i dont usually change my strings untill one of them breaks...

Well, I'm more of an acoustic player and you can definitely notice the difference between a new set of strings and a month old strings that have been played consistently. Because of this, I consistently change my strings to keep the guitar in the best health I can :)

i change my strings every few months. 1) strings are cheap 2) i enjoy the peace of mind of fresh strings and 3) i enjoy the practice of changing strings. it's fun to do and it's a good way to clear your mind, sort of like a meditation type thing!

i buy in bulk (teaching forces this, lol)
D'Addario's have never let me down, in any gage on any (elec/ac)Plank.
(i'd buy Elixirs, but damn! a mans gotta pay the mortgage, lol!)

D'Addario's have started to annoy me lately. They changed their formula sometime in the middle of last year and I don't think they sound the same anymore... I feel it's less full as it used to be.

Good thing I have a few lying around before that change :)


I've tried Cleartones on my Larrivee before: things are quite good: and they last about twice as long, but just nothing compares to that crisp new sound that comes from a brand new set of strings. Each guitar is different... but D'Addario seems to be the best choice for any guitar >.

I've not noticed, but then again I still have 3 10-packs of each 'set' i use in the gear-room, and so, am guessing this would predate the 'formula change'.
I would love to hear more details re: this formula-change, if you'd care to expound.

Which strings are best? Changes made? Different strings for different guitars? Sounds like a basis for another Afro essay! lol
