What is he using in this solo? It's Whole Lotta Love live and I always hear him doing this thing in the solo thats like controlled feedback and he looks like hes motioning to a tech who controls it. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what this little gadget is.

Apparently, he (JP) used a device called a theremin. It looks like a black box with an antenna sticking out of it. You get different whistles, squeaks and feedback type noises out of it by moving your hand closer then further away from it. |

lol. Sorry guys. I never did post a vid and didn't notice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU-PoUwECjI --- He [JP=Jimmy Page]
starts using it at 1:40 .
And thanks deefa! That made complete sense. In the vid he's just moving his hand away and back from this pole. I thought it was just part of the stage at first hahaha.

Yeah man. I actually got to play on one of these at a museum. Its stupidly hard to make any kind of musical noise with it. |

Yes, it's a Theremin.
Sorry Schechter_Player, I'm gonna have to disagree with you. There are actually special techniques that Theremin Players use to make MUSIC with one of those and unless you know them you're not going anywhere with a Theremin. It's like somebody that has never played guitar messing around with a guitar (probably more fun, though).
For anyone that cares, they usually have two antenas, one for the pitch of the sound and one for the volume of it (so you can control the "action" and different effects). There's more about it on Wikipedia. |

Oh, yeah, i actually looked at that after. Still doesn't make a lot of sense to me...
I should clarify. I found it incredibly hard to make music with them.
And in the video, they aren't doing anything melodic with it. |
