First, what does the circle with an R inside mean when I look at chord tabs? The E5 chord for example has a circle with an R in it on the 0 fret for the top strng.
Second, I like a lot of music from the early 90s, like the Seattle grunge scene. What sort of pedals did most bands use? Or was it not a standard sort of pedal for most bands?
Sorry if these questions are very simple to answer, I am new to guitars! |

the R is for Root note, the E chord has the R on an E because that is its root, once you get to know the guitar and music better it makes more sense |

I'm not a gear expert, but i would say that there was probably a wide range of effects pedals used, if any were used. I'd say that they probably just used overdriven tube amps, but like i said, i'm not an expert. |

I think a major part of Nirvana's sound was the Boss DS-1 pedal. Not sure though, but I read that somewhere. |

I've used a DS-1 for a while now, and it doesn't really give me a Nirvana vibe, but i've never really looked at it. |

I think it was a combo of his amp and that orange box that was the equation. Never actually played one mainly because I'm an overdrive kind of guy :D |

Thanks for the responses guys! I grew up a drummer listening to bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, etc., so I figured I'd pick up a guitar and start learning that sort of music first. I just was never sure why I would try to play a song, and it just wouldn't sund right, despite playing the correct notes/chords. I figured it might be the pedal. |

Well, when it comes to sound producing and effects, there are no simple answer. To "guitar sound" or "seattle sound" cant be done with one pedal. or even two.
Guitar, amphead, cabinets and all the pedals and whatnot affect for the overall sound. What comes to DS-1, Kurt Kobain used it but I doubt that its everyones choice.
I do not know "seattle sound" or Grunge deeper, but common effects used are Heavy distortion and Chorus. VOX30, Fender Twin reverb and Fender Vibrokings was often used as an amplifiers, but again those are not everyone's choice.
other effects that are known used in seattle sound
MXR Blue Box
BJF Honey Bee
Electro-Harmonix stuff, choruses, micromuff, big muff and a like...
well, hope this helps a bit.
