why would you not use one? how much time does it take to activate a metronome before you start playing that you would consider it a "waste"? |

'Nome's are great !
i have an exercise i use on my students that involves "Noming" :
slow the Nome to say 50 or 60 BPM and play all your "fast stuff" at that tempo for a week or so, never speeding up. then , the next week (or lesson)play normally, and you will be amazed at how both your rhythm and speed have improved !!
RAWK!

It provide rythm and tempo. Is it waste to play over drums? or in rythm? yeah... When improvising and experimenting with scales and stuff it might be not as necessary, but when you are practising then its a must. or atleast other rythmtrack. |

Tedious? Yes. Waste of time? No.
Honestly, that to me is like asking "Should I tune my guitar?". |
