What is the sustain here?

Ratio = (((Sustain/100) ^ 5) * 100 + 1)

okay, I don't know what sustain here. This is direct from Digitech regarding their flanger settings in the RP90 pedal that I own.
Please help someone, suggestions maybe.

lol thts acctually kinda funny because for me sustain is just somthing i put on top of my tone to make my solos sound better. i practice with little sustain. and i dont think theres any math equation that can do this. its all what you hear and u think is right amount.

i know that, but me being a tone perfectionist I like to experiment with really close settings on things. I don't know whether they mean sustain in the context of playing and holding a note, or something else. Because I don't count how long I hold a note, I'm usually not actually thinking about too much when I play.
This is what Digitech gave me to work with...I bet they are laughing right now.

that's not what the equation is for. The equation above is for the FLANGER settings, and i don't know what sustain might include here. Either the length of the notes i hold, or something else.

ive always hted them. very digital pedals...

yeah, but, I only use the EQ, delay, and maybe noise gate on mine. The amps, just don't sound very good to me, too bassy on the plexi model, too much treble on the JMP model. Finally I just said screw it. I haven't used a model on that pedal unless I needed to play late at night and not wake people up by putting headphones on and into the pedal.

Casey - can you give me the actual link to where you got the equation from? If I can see it in context I might be able to shed some light on it for you. No guarantees though :)

what did the email say? i mean first guess would be note length (which is sustain in a nutshell)? but to be perfectly honest, if thats all they've given you then who knows?

Make Up Gain (in dB) = 15 * (1 – e ^ (1/5) * (Ratio - 1))

The Make up gain is something the engineers use.

It (tone) is at least 90% Finger generated.
I've toured/gigged since 1980 or so and i can say with absolute certainty that "it's (tone) all about the human"
IE: in these 30+ years i have seen almost every conceivable attempt at "tonal bliss / orgasm"
its odd but damn near true that 5 out 6 guitarists (not, musicians... but simply guitarists) lean on a barrage of pedal-this/that from basic Boss, MXR, etc, to *'Boutique' pedals (*over 500 a 'box') for their tone. its easy to see cause they are usually at the bar or in back smoking one WITHOUT a guitar-in-hand.
they most often fail... over processed and glib.
while , on the other hand you see the cat on stage , adjusting Vol, Rev and gain on a well worn amp with a well worn guitar.
this person will practice (can still smoke up but..) until his fingers are red, or its time to play.
no roadies, no tech, just a guy and a few old pedals, playing great melodies with deep rich tone.

I actually use to own a couple of acoustics. Now, one of them I lent my brother because he wanted to learn how to play, but the entire face of the guitar almost came off. The other was a yamaha, nothing special, but it sounded pretty good. I left that in the hands of my dad during the move and I haven't seen it since my Sophomore year...:(
I'm not actually trying to increase my 'sustain' or figure out how it works. I am trying to figure out how my flanger setting works on my RP90, they told me it increases by the same amount each time, but the little x=sustain threw me off.

why not just email them back asking what they mean

i did, they haven't got back to me yet, but this is Labor Day weekend, so I'm still hopeful.
