i use mostly D'Addario through DR strings are good but i can't stand E-ball slinkys. i also use high gauge through my Tele(needs a new nut and I'm to lazy) only has 10s on it but that's as low as i recommend any one should go. I also like D'Addario a lot because they met my crazy string needs other wise i would have to buy them custom.
i also recommend if you gong to start experimenting with strings learn how to set-up a guitar properly(tons of how to videos on the net) i know to many people who have mess up there guitar beyond repair by just changing strings with out adjusting.

and for the music i play; i play everything i hear no matter what. i try not to limit myself musically(obviously doing everything is imposable).

I was going to buy E-ball slinkys, but a buddy of mine refused to let me:P Probaly a good idea!

I have been thinking of testing out D'Addario for a while, Mainly becaus Joe Satriani Talks very varm about it and he knows his strings:P

I use Ernie Ball strings at the moment, but I used to use D'Addario for years. I prefer Ernie Ball I think, but I'm still looking to switch to something that lasts a bit longer.

And RA: the album in your avatar is mint.

yeah I'm by no means telling you not to try e-ball(many people like em there has to be something to em) you just asked for my opinion strings are ONE of the most misunderstood aspects due to obvious factors. like the wound G for instance.

yeah i love public enemy i think there one of the best bands there mix of Apollonian and Dionysian art is astounding no wonder why record companies push the gangster stuff and now the dumbed down to the extreme gangster rap. that and i wanted to put something out that wasn't all this rock and roll crap

@ GMG - lol. You ever try standard tuning dude?

Anyway, back on topic.

I use Ernie Ball Super slinkys for standard and drop D. I may try drop C. BTW a few questions
1 - How do you tune in drop C?
2 - Why do different gauges matter for different tunings?

its always good to be able to use different tunings

1. tune to drop D, then D standard, then drop the lowest string to a C
2. the lower the strings are the looser they are so you should use heavier strings

Oh, so the looser the string is, the heavier gauge you could use. BTW - Does that make it sound better, or does it just help the guitar stay in shape better?

@Ozzfan, to get a note lower in pitch, you either slacken the string, increase the length of the string, or increase the mass of the string. Obviously, you can't change the length of the neck of your guitar (which rules out the second option), so you can either slacken the string (using the tuning pegs) or use a thicker string. If you slacken the string too much though then it becomes unplayable, which is why people use thicker strings, so they don't need to slacken the strings as much, or at all.

Okay cool. When I get my ML do you think I should use it for drop tunings or the LP? I'm think I'll use the ML for most of the drop stuff and LP for standard tuning. BTW, what gauge is best for drop d?

probably just what you normally use, because the only string that is different is the low E string

I use D'Addario XL on my Fender Strat, i think they are .10's

On my Acoustic, I cycle through D'Addario Phosphor Bronze, Martins, Cleartones, and Elixirs.

:-P It's good to keep a variety going

Well, in my case, I had been playing acoustic for about a year when I bought my strat. It has 7's on it I think, and they were so fragile, I could of swore I could break the string just by bending, so I asked for a heavier gauge.

My acoustic used to be 13's, so the 10's are a little bit of a weird change, but they work for me. My acoustic has since been stringed with lights (12's), and I just put a fresh set of strings on my electric and they sound great. I haven't used anything beside 10's, so I would not know what the differece would be.

I could go dig thru my garbage and find the string case...

i recommend using Rotosound strings, they always include an extra free top e for those huge bends you may do snapping the string. well thats what happens to me from time to time. damn good strings. i am also a fan or ernie balls but they come off more expensive where i live.
