In order to be a real private teacher for music you need to be graded, and show proof of your grading. The top grade is 8 and they'll expect you to know that. In order to get that grade you have to read notation, play a number of genres, play two songs which they've chosen out - these two songs you have to play while reading notation. Demonstrate a perfect understanding of rhythm and timing and so on.
Some private teachers aren't always approved and haven't got their certificate to prove their grading, but they still charge something like £30 an hour. Your teacher sounds lame, find a better one man, you should be learning at least one song a lesson and have understood what goes on within the song.
Yes, Chords and Chord progressions would be known for a guitar teacher - they should know crap loads otherwise I'd class them as arrogant (and ignorant) pricks. :D |

To be a teacher, you will need to know a number of Genres(Including Jazz or Classical). Your gonna need to be a very proficient sight reader. You'll need to know textbook theory as well. And get a new teacher like Jazz said. |

I think about everything you need to be self taught you can find here and at www.justinguitar.com. They are the only two sites I use. This is a good site to learn theory, and the video lessons at justinguitar.com really help you learn different techniques. |

Check out Jamey Abersold. He may be a Jazz musician, but he covers everything in his CDs (around 60-70) and DVDs (lost count). He explains everything in such detail that it helps a pure beginner become a pro in no time. |

We're not in the same country so I won't be able to provide an address. Start by asking from your closest music school (no other subjects) ask them if they do gradings, if not, ask them where you can get it from and they should give you the number. I'd be shocked if they didn't know. |

i could be wrong but i don't think they do that in the USA i think they just go by your education that what you have done in music and any degrees you have. again i could be wrong but there should be a more formal rating systems here. it would ween out the idiots of the people i have talked to that first learned/still are learning from. |

No, I definitely know you get graded in America too, I just don't know where it is they mainly do it.
The highest grading is 8. |
