Welcome to the forum.
Scales are basically what make a song, each song will be using a scale. A scale is a number of notes put together to create a certain feel and can lead to creating certain songs.
First you should look at chords before you jump into the scales, then when you're ready look at the Major scale first.
Come view my profile and click on the lessons thing, then click on my "Major Scale and modes within" lesson. Learn the first box only!! The rest is far too complicated for you at the moment. Give it time and then you can step onto the rest. |

Alright, start with Chords. Basically the first box is the common "scale" we use in western songs, for now it'll be difficult to understand. But this is one of those things you can't really question why it's there. when you've learnt some basic chords, major, minor and open string chords. Then look back at the major scale and just learn it, it'll be confusing at first but it should make sense as time goes by.
Do you know the open strings of the standard tuning? E, A, D, G, B, E? Just incase, the top string (thickest) is known as the 6th string which (in standard tinging) is using the note E. 5th = A, 4th = D, 3rd = G, 2nd = B, 1st = E.
Since you're starting right from scratch, you might want to look into getting a personal teacher. It'll be a lot easier than anyone typing stuff. Because we can't show it to you. But stick around, we'll be here to help none the less. |

well, get used to guitar. Strum chords more likely with metronome http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/metronome.php (which can be found here) or with drum track if possible. Learn to play with rhytm and get used to chord changes.
Pay attention that you finger chords right. Its good to learn them properly. start with these. Also you should start learn to play with pick immediately. Practice upstrokes and downstrokes and alternative picking. These are good to practise even with one string. Use the metronome. Good luck and have fun with your guitar.
Oh and welcome to the forum.
Cheers!

Oh, and a beginner you say? Learn the major and minor pentatonic scales first. They kick ass once you know how to make them sound like music and not a scale. Actually most scales do, haha.

Hey check out my lesson "Total beginner". It doesn't go into scales but it will get you started in the right direction. It shows some beginner exercises to get your fingers working and some other good stuff. PM me with any questions.

There are three different Categories. Beginner, Intermediate, and advanced. It may have been like that for some time I just haven't noticed. |

Simply, a scale is a group of tones that can be played ascending and descending and is built off of a root. It gets much more in-depth then that but thats the simple definition. |

alternet picking is when you pick a string up, then down, then up, etc
yeah, probly stick with chords for awhile, learn some new ones. learn power chords, then learn some scales
and even if you dont understand scales yet you can still get started with alternate picking and stuff, play with some chromatics, try the 24 permutations to get your picking hand and ur fingers to be coordinated |

Ask your guitar teacher what he knows about guitar, ask him about the major scale. If he gives you a bad answer ditch him. Teachers should always be explainging things when they're teaching you a song, the song is usually an example of what they're trying to explain. Look for a decent one if you really want to get somewhere. |

A good way to start with scales is to cease consumption of hard liquor before using a keyboard. |
