Are you talking about something like this?

I have recorded with tape in the past and bought that tascam portastudio new in the 90's for about $400+.

My original one blew up and stopped working so i picked up another one off ebay for $65 with shipping.

The thing about working with tape is if you record a song but then decided to add a bridge or re-arrange it some you have to re-record everything. with computer you can just move files around.

You are also limited to 4 or 8 tracks.

I don't get why you're not just recording right to CD, it's a lot harder to record tape to CD and the sound quality won't be as good.

What? Am I going back in time today? I just had a falshback to the 90s in the other topic, when I got here I was still day dreaming about the happy 90s and now I even am gettting flash backs that I like to a decade earlier I didn't even live in :D It's almost as if I had a previous life there or something!

Anyway, I kind of see what you mean. I got a CD a while ago called 'The best of country' and it had accient live hits on it, prehaps not tape some of them but it I liked ther sounds of them. Especially whne I listened to Hanks 'I'm so lonesome I could cry', Boxcar Willie's 'Truck drivin' man' and Tammy's 'Stand by your man' I just loved the way it sounded from how it was recoreded. It was different (I was going to say more echoey, but then that'd be silly as they were live and they would have!)

But I'd want to get my songs on CD straight away if I were you, my sister got a pretty cheap tape recorder about 6 years ago and it kept freezing, sometimes even just kept repeating a second of whatever word someone was about to say on it and the inside just broke a lot. They MIGHT be more modernly improved now, but not much I'd imagine. Any chance you could buy one, se what you think and if you don't like it send it back with the reciept?

The kids in my local scene are bringin tapes back. The cool thing is usually vinyl (for a punk or hardcore band, vinyl is the highest acheivment you could hope for).

But vinyl is expensive, so kids are putting out demo tapes as split EPs.

That tascam 4-track is good but if you want real quality recordings try a Zoom H4.

just as the argurement over solid state vs. tube, the same arguement goes on about analog vs. digital.

The nice thing about the tascam 4-track is that it's very portable, and it kicks ass for recording live. the Zoom H4 looks like something all together different. though it has last of the same features how do you record 4 tracks live at once?

I've had friends who had fosteck, and yamaha recorders but they did not stand up like my tascam did.

I'll not use anything else for tape decks. The 242 is basicly the step up form the 414 and includes automatic tape function buttons (this is good) my first recorder the record button broke (i had it for about 10 years before it broke. I rigged it with a washer from a remote control car and got it to work again.

With the tape platform i would not use 8 tracks you loos band with. this is how it works...1 cassette tape has a right and left channel on side A and right and left channel on side B. a recorder like this will only use one side and utilize all for tracks at once. when you further split it your going to loos sound quality and bandwidth.
