Yes, this is sage advice, follow it well.
You know those people you see who have their guitar hanging around their wang hight? DONT DO THAT!
Keep your guitar high enough that you can keep your elbow at about a 90 degree angle and it should be fine.
I was at a jam a while ago where I met annother conservatory student who wanted to try out my guitar since he recognized it. After putting it and seeing it was at the right hight, we saw someone else there who had it hanging low. There were 2 people at that jam who recieved a standing ovation and 1 who left early because everyone went quiet when he played.

I always had trouble playing standing up too, all it took was a ton of practice. Try playing standing up all the time, don't sit down for a long time, you'll get a hang of it.

raising the guitar definatly helped, also my switch gets in the way of my tapping. i found a comforatable position for my guitar but the strqp will fall off when i put it ther, maybe i should get loking straps or the hook kind?

strap-looks are a good idea there my friend =] I've got use to playing standing up now, lots of fiddiling with strap height and I have it set about waist/crotch height and it's at a 45 degree angle so the headstock is on the diagonal line going though my armpit, then again I have long arms so It's comftorble for me.

I also know what you mean about back-problems, I have serious lower back problems to much time with a poor posture, all I can say is try to sit/stand/etc. with a good posture that's comfy also try some back exercises to build of the muscles there if you do remember to do exercises for your frontal muscles the two support the other if one is stronger/more then the other it can cause pain in the weaker muscle.

Side note, Skold why are your posts suddenly jibs at bassists? Theres nothing wrong with them or there instrument, hell all the Les Pauls (even a ***ing Gibson) I've tried are heavier then most basses I've played....sigh -.- sorry Skold you bring the worst out in me.
But I will agree accuracy and claraty over anything, even over speed..

Probably one with a Basswood body (lightest body you can get, If I remember correctly). Sorry, but it's a fact that basses are generally heavier.

I threw my back out when I was 16 and have had really bad lower back pain all the time since. So I just drink a lot and take pain pills. Hopefully you can find a better solution.

Vote for the strap height here too, lots of help.

I always stand when I play, mosh around when I play and kicking air and do other kind of mayhem when I play. I want play and practise for rock! and gigging... Sitting while playing is for classical plimpeliplompeli...

Cheers!
