Where Next?

I have been playing guitar for about 4 years now. For the first year i took lessons with an acoustic. I was taught songs as well as chords and a basic theory of the guitar. Then i bought an electric, an ibanez after about a year and a half of guitar playing. I took lessons with that for another year and was taught in more depth about things like soloing. Then i quit lessons and started to practice myself. I started playing around with bar chords and soloing in the pentatonic to them. Just recently i got into practicing the modes of the major scale. As well i learned a little of the blues. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what i should work on next and what will make me a better guitarist because that is the point of all this. To get better. So please give me some advice on what i should learn in order to become a better guitarist.

oh actually im well into writing and i have been for at least a half a year. im talking about the different skill elements to the guitar. soloing is one skill but there must be others....

UNDERSTANDING GEAR AND USING IT TO SHAPE YOUR SOUND.
PLAY AS FAST AS YNGWIE OR SOME OTHER SHREDDERS.

what scales do you know? what kinda music do you like?

I would say you still have plenty to learn from a good teacher if you want to be a better guitarist.

If for whatever reason you decide you don't want a teacher, ask yourself what it is you want from the guitar and study accordingly.
There is not really a one thing to do at any given time in your development, you should always be working on several skillsets to improve in the best way.

Self-discovery is important. Though I would also encourage you to get a teacher. But don't depend on him/her!

What I would encourage you to do for the time being is to; relate chords into scales, and understand why and how they work. Then study arpeggios and licks and understand how they relate to chords and scales.

Remember: Arpeggios (sweeps) are chords! Don't forget this.

With each thing you learn, make a song about it. Put what you learnt into a song and write a note next to that song what you just learnt.

It's important to be able to apply your knowledge onto your instrument.

Like the lady said, an arpegio is a chord played in seperate notes.
So if a chord is Aadd2 A B C# E, playing A B C# E seperately would be the arpegio.
There is not really a lot to learn about them.

(yes I know a normal chord would have worked as an easier example but this is for all the people on this forum who think arpegios are only the basic 1 3 5 (7))

JoeDalton's right, there isn't just the basic 1,3,5,7 arpeggio/chord, there are so many amazing arpeggios. You'll love them.

The example I'm using just incase you don't know is Dmaj7.

They're the exact same. Because they're playing the exact same notes, but just in a different position.
