Searching for new equipment

My workstation's hard drive seems to have erased itself, and I have no idea how I had everything EQ'd and how I had the effects set. Anyway, I'm looking for effects pedals, and amps.

Listen to my stuff, get to know my sound, and then see if you have any suggestions for me.


Note: Can someone tell me how I might set up all of these pedals after I get them? I'm gonna make my own pedal board, so I should know this.

Peavey Amps are pretty damn awesome.

I've been spamming Boss ME-20 and ME-50 for ages now. It'll work for your style but also has unnecessary effects which aren't your style. Depends on how you use it.

Crybaby is a pretty fun pedal, too.

I really like my Vox valvetronics amp it’s one of the 30 waters. It has some pretty decent built in effects and it also has a line out so you can plug and play. I also have a Johnson j-station. I’m more after sounds of amps that actual effects. When your recording usually reverb and delay are great effects to have for vocals and drums. A compressor is also another great effect for drums and bass. It cuts down on distortion (the bad kind) and on the bass will make it punch through the mix more.

How much are you willing to spend on an amp? I'd say Vox AC30 (the Beatles used them), but those are pretty costly.

As for pedal order, most people have wah -> disortion/OD -> modulation (chorus and phaser) -> time-based, like delay.

If you don't have many pedals, you can power them with 9V batteries, but if you get a lot, you may want a power supplier for them.

Id give that advice but I'd be saying the same thing.

Although a Vox or Fender does fit your style, you may not be able to afford it.

How much on an amp? $400 - $500.

Oooh, I'd check out Fender's tube amps probably. Maybe Blues Jr. or Pro Jr.?

the are under $250 new and i picked one up for $120 on craigs list. It has a crap load of amp modules, and effects.

The thing about a fender or marshall is when you go to record it can be a real pain. You have to mike it and decent volume to get that "tube" tone. It' can be hard to do when your inspired in the middle of the night.

^ Yeah the problem with tube is that you need to crank to get the full potential. My amp (Fender Champ 600) is only 5 watts, so I can crank it without breaking my windows. :P

Also, how loud would that 30w get?

a few of us here have that specific model...Tele,EMB and myself.
it's actually very loud for 30W and as far as tone it's really
geared toward the heavier side of rock and does it quite well,
it does lack volume though when played clean. footswitch sold
separately. definately a play before you buy type of amp. not
everyone likes them due to the fact they dont dont play clean
very well. it does sport a line out for recording too ;)

as far as a full on tube amp,i certainly would not make any investment
of any kind of high wattage amp say 25W and up unless your gonna gig
with it. like GRX stated it does take a tremendous amout of volume
to get that heavenly tube breakup we all love.

my all tube amp is the Blackheart 5W little giant with a bitmo triple
bypass mod. very bedroom friendly and tons of tone w/o bothering
the neighbors. amp & mod were $210 total (head version)

I'm gonna have to get down to the shop and check out some of these hybrid's and tubes.

Hey TheAmericanBrit, are you gigging or just composing and recording? my vox is pretty loud but not sure it compete compete with drums. I would like the 50 watter. I hooked up the line out to my mixer/computer and got some pretty sweet tones out of it. It sounded better through my PC than through the build in speaker.

The nice thing about these moded amp kits is it gives a nice pallet to experiment with. I usually just use the mellower sounds like the blackface and the tweed.

You mentoned in another post about wanting to incorporate classical music (diff thread) have you considered a little crappy keyboard?

Yeah, I'm probably going to get a synthesizer though.

I'm gonna be gigging (if you can call it that) and recording. I'm probably just going to run the amp through a mixer and then through the PA system.

it's a midi controller and you can get all sorts of sounds out of it with a PC. I want it just for stuido and recording. I may also look at bigger models.

^ Yeah, I forgot about the Crate V's, but they are supposedly really good (I haven't tried them yet). They're essentially the same thing as Crate Palomino, which I have tried, and I really liked it.

They're dirt cheap too!
