How do you come up your melodies for your songs, just comes out while singing or do you use your guitar to get a good melody and use that melody to sing?

Does anyone have any tips on how to create good melodies?

I can hear the melodies I make in my head before I write them down. Not exactly helpful there.

Otherwise, try to use the piano or guitar to make some melodies, if you like the sound of certain parts, save it somewhere, and expand on it in different ways. Create harmonies, too.

We'll I plug in the guitar and just start playing and if I like it then I'll hit record and just keep messing with it.You will be amazed at how many diffrent combos and diffrent style of leads you can come up with. The only bad thing is with me sometimes I get lost in it,then in a few days or so I come back to it and have a hole diffrent look at it.And like Jazz said I can hear melodies in my head also but what I have in mind allways changes when I pick up the guitar and then it's like shit! I did it again....lol.There are really no wrong ways NCF ,thats whats great about music ....there are no rules.

ill usually think of something in my head and then try and put it onto guitar.

sometimes a different melody will evolve that way when i can slightly alter bits.

if i have a chord progression ill usually just play that through and try and pick out the changes and the things to sort of "amplify" with the melody.

hopefully that makes some sense.

He wants more detail than that, Skold.

Imprvisation is exactly what we do in the first place. We improvise to create a song.

Umm.. We actually use rules when we create songs. We have thriads, scales and all these theories and we have an Idea how we use those rules.

When it comes to improvisation, you can ofcourse follow these rules when "improvising", but I suggest more for otherkind of way to get closer to improvisation. I suggest closing your eyes and trying to leave those rules background, only then you can get over the usual ways or rules and that can be called Improvisation. Mostly appears in solos and bridges. My 2 cents

Cheers!

it's pretty much a secret. if you have them, they are in your head somewhere, and you have to find them.

Well, that's pretty much all I do.

But, in the spirit of telling a tale,

.....Ages ago....in a land not so far a way, there was a man named "Kito" who would pray to the God's of Episus for blessings of great and mighty musical ability`s....and I sought this man out, and paid for the blessings......with my SOUL! DUN DUN DUUUUUN!

Empirism, and to everyone else:

Learn the rules, THEN BREAK THEM!

Don't think that there are rules and regulations that you must abide to. Music is whatever you want it to be! Make it however you want, if it sounds good to you, keep it. Music theory is only there to help guide us.

Aye, thats what I try all the time...with poor results. Maybe im not so up to law's and rules...when I dont even know them... so how make music then... oh yeah... breaking those rules by accident...luckily, I have consept "Improvisation" where I can cover that "I dont know the even theory of rules"...and if my ear screams in recording session that "THATS SHIT!!", well then I try something else...*goin back to school* xD

WHEN DID BLACKHOLESUN BECOME MODERATOR?

Anyways my best melodies usually comes from my imagination and not improvisation, although I have created some good melodies from messing with the guitar.

I think melody and songwriting is like taking a dump. it just comes out. Probably a ban analogy but it should come naturally, don't force a melody or it will sound like crap.

Gez, i just can't get rid of the poop metaphors.
