Not really just pick it up and play it.Only bad thing is the fret size ...I know they dont have frets but you get what I mean it's smaller and yes you can play eruption on a violin.....lol...sounds cool give it a try soy. |

I always wanted to play a bowed instrument when I was younger, but my mom said it was piano or nothing :( She holds an unfair bias towards the piano and pipe organ. |

So i was at at some electronic store and looked at some cables they had on clearance right next to some music equipment. I started talking with this older feller. He played the violin professional in Texas swing jazz and bluegrass band all his life. He said that the first 5 years of playing was learning where the notes were.

Tele I hear ya but I have no understanding of notes,I go by sounds- a fret board is still a fret board, big ,small, cello size, banjo size.uk size(which I want) E is a E less strings higher jump in octaves but still the same.I'm not being direspectful please don't take me wrong old freind and I respect the study of the instrument but it is the same. |

notim, it's not the same. violins are tuned differently. violins do not have frets. you simply have to ingrain in your fingers which notes are where on the violin, in each position. there is no violin tablature.
and that video was absolutely awful. terrible racket. maybe it's just that van halen was a awful solo writer, but whatever he was playing, it sounded like a cat being nailed to a baby. |

Many "learner" violins I've seen have markers on them that show where the notes are. They're generally what a little kid just learning would use, kind of neat though. Now that I think about it, it's like a lot of fretless bass guitar. |

it is alot like a fretless bass. u can buy special tape stuff to put where the notes are, then u can take it off when u get a feel for it |

I learned to play some classical pieces which I cant remember the names of but I can play most of what I hear except those incredibly fast violin solos. I can only play major and minor though. |

Well, with violins you can also play "inbetween notes", since there aren't any frets, it's really easy to play a note which is inbetween the real sound of the note. So it's possible to play inbetween C and C# for example. It takes some practice, but you'll be able to know where the notes are the more you play it. |
