I have one tube amp and one SS amp.
Out of those I prefer the tube, but mostly since my SS is a crappy starter amp.
There are excellent solid states out their though, like the Roland Jazz Chorus. BB King uses a solid state amp, a Gibson Lab series, that's supposed to be really nice. |

solid state amps are more reliable, by far, and they sound the same at ten as at one. they're great for practice. they are also less expensive. but all that comes at the cost of tone.
solid state circuitry simply can not transmit the signals nuances and harmonics the way tube circuitry can. they lack depth. they are not very dynamic.
personally, i use tubes.

I prefer tubes but they come at a cost, its hard to get a cranked sound out of a tube if it isnt cranked(louder the better) and how the heads are, meaning they blow.. solid state are just that..so the Black Heart is small enough at a low enough wattage to get a cranked sound and still small enough to play at your house and the cost is pretty low and if miked through a PA its plenty, so I would go with the tube, but the tube is clean so if ya want effects? that will cost ya. |

tube is better....period...elcamation mark! lol reason? tone. theyr heavier generally louder, pain in the ass to drag around, they break more, but are much better then solid state b/c of tone. |

tubes by far. they just sound warm compared to solid state amps. i have a hybrid amp and it sounds just fine. best of both worlds. |

ya tubes maybe, but they're too sensitive and fragile. "Tube performance can deteriorate slightly over time before eventual catastrophic failure" |

A professional is almost always going to use tube amps. There are some cases where a musician really likes a certain tone they get out of a certain solid state amp, but those are usually isolated incidents. |

My ears tell me tube, and my wallet tries to say solid state, but it gets knocked the F@#$ down.
Besides, you can find some decent deals on used tube amps and fix them up a bit.
I paid $200 for a used peavey deuce (120 watts, 2x12, don't know the tube specs) and then spent another $180 to have it checked out and fixed up a bit. If you want to play quietly use a 5w practice amp, otherwise a good tube amp is worth every penny. |
