What are scales for ?

I don't understand What scales are used for?

They are used in every genre of music, to give you a good sound to fit it into the key you are playing in. If you didn't use them, your "song" would sound like crap. I don't know too much about them so I will let some of the others round here tell you bout 'em

scales are the root of music...at least western music....you use scales to build chords, to make solos, to create riffs and create tonal varieties in a song. i could go on for awhile...but ill leave it at that.

i think it would be best to go way back. if you listen to classical music they were always noted with the key. for example Bach's Violin Concerto in A. right there in the title we knew it was in key of A and hence based on an A Major scale.

with the 7 notes of the A major scale were are able to build chords, melody, and solos. but this is based on the foundation of the 7 notes of the scale.

I hope that helps some but you should really check into some theory books or lessons.

or you could just go with chromatics? hahaha no scales are of the upmost importance in everything about music.

CHROMATICS?!?!?!XD go with the "normal" scales , because chromatics just sound shit(no offense) a good scale to start with is the Am pentatonic, 5 pattern .. NO CHROMATICS!! XD

It's not that Chromatics sound bad, it just depends how you use them. Guitarslinger124 is explaining to me what they are and I am understanding. He says; say you start of an A, you just keep going up a half step until you hit another A. Chromatics have no set key in them, no major, minor, etc.

But to start off learning scales, it is important to learn the Major, Minor, and I would say Pentatonic scales. Also try some blues scale if you'd like, later on...

its all about context wildchild...if you play chromatics out of context, or any scale out of context, chances are it wont sound so hot. but if you know what you are doing and know a bit of scale theory and you can find the right context, it will sound just fine.
