I've been writing a song and part of it is in 4/4 but then it changes to a triplet feel. It's sounds a bit..."rough" and I don't know how to make the transition smoother.

Any Ideas?

you could leave it..maybe put a pause inbetween where the time changes? lots of songs do that. like this one listen to the verse to the chorus: (chorus is around 0:40)

That's not a change to a triplet feel. That's just a tempo change.

But I get what you mean.

Still my favorite song of all time...

As for the time change, you could try a percussion solo/break then jump into the new time, or try straight 1/4 notes for the last measure before the change

Listen to Megadeth. Dave Mustaine does stuff like that all the time. In particular listen to "End Game" from the album, "Endgame". Listen to the transition at about 1:34ish.

Rock on!

I got it guys. I used a pause in between. It was the best option for what I was doing. Thanks for the advice guys.

Yeah pause is always good choise. Other option might be crash+pickslide combined couple notes that guide to the triplet...

Another option is to just use one measure as a sortof transitional measure. (Note: I haven't listened to the examples above, which might use this idea.)

You can just use this one measure to form your transition from 4/4 to 6/8 or whatever time signature your song uses. I am not sure if your music has percussion in it or not, but the drummer in me suggests that you could even have that transitional measure be only the drummer with maybe the guitars and bass using a whole note, just kinda having a single note ring out through the measure.

Just some ideas man, but I think that would sound really really cool.

Maybe changes from 4/4 to 6/8? 6/8 is a compound duple meter so it'll definitely give you your triplet feel. ^^
