Broken strings

My high E string snapped yesterday and now I need a new one. How do I know what type of strings to get (the strings on there now came with the guitar so I don't know anything about them)?

i get 10 packs of guitar strings over the internet. They are less than 4 us dollars a set that way.

Go to a music shop, and get a completely new set. Expeiriment.
try different gauges, brands etc. Ask the clerk what he would
reccomend. explain your style,favored genre,and all that.

If you change your gauge you will need a setup, so take it to the music shop and try to get them to analyze the string width, unless you have a micrometer yourself or know someone with one.

Gshed has good points about switching things up, but keep the (possible or likely) need for a setup in mind. I also think you should get a whole new set..very important.

How do your strings feel otherwise? Do you want to be able to bend easier? Do you strum really hard and maybe your strings feel like they are moving too much? Let us know and we'll give some good advice to take to the shop with you. Shop guys are never that helpful in my area.

On second thoughs, I change my mind. Get some DR Pure Blues 10's and an allen wrench that fits your bridge and a little ruler. Unless you have an acoustic, in which case, get someone else to set it up; and in this case get the same gauge strings that you previously had.

Are you the first owner? It should me pretty easy to figure out what the original guage is then.

A setup is important.Its always important too find whats important
to try to find what feels comfy for you.

there are so many variables to think about, but it really just makes
things sound super complicated, its just strings.

But I can narrow it down to about 4.
beside the setup.

#1 Do you have strong hands? Or a hard technique? this would indicate maybe a heavier gauge maybe 11's or such.

#2 what type of guitar do you have? Is it fixed bridge? tremolo bar?
etc. tremolos,floating use "mostly" lighter gauge strings.

#3 what genre do you play? jazz might use flat wounds,high gauge ones.
shred,some bright steels,or nickels maybe 10 gauge or so.

#4 THE FEEL of the strings..

My uncle recomeneded Enie Ball super slinky strings, he's a good player, so I bought some. I can't wait to put them on and try them out.

i went from D'addarios to Elixers (with 4 other packs in between lol).

elixers were the last strings i ever thought i would like.....they can handle my extreme levels of finger sweat and not turn bronze......so just expirement and you will find something that you like


also.....i started using 10s recently....but i might go back to 9s...i miss the slinkynesss

I used 9-42 ones. Their alot better than the strings that came with the guitar, they sound cool.

I use Sfarzo Drop D Super Screamers(SFT set). They're 10-52 gauge, but the tone is incredible and they outlasted the Ernie Ball 10-52s by about 5 weeks(most I could squeesze out of them was a couple weeks). It's been almost a full 2 months since I put them on and although the lower strings have lost some of their snap and presence, the unwound strings have yet to get badly rusted or break and they still sound pretty smooth during bending. And you can buy these from juststrings.com for a whopping $5. Plus you get a free pack of picks with your first purchase from the site, so that was cool.

Ernie ball strings always make my fretboard look like its been cut up by a razor. so i stopped using them a while ago.....plus they suck
