Part 10 - THE TIME IS NOW! MY MOST EPIC POST EVER! Ok, so I'm going to talk about something really crazy!!! It is one of the most Brutal and Metal things ever! Right next to boiling Lobsters! (In death metal voice) Marketing and Distribution! I have copy rights to that song title just so you know, that and "Kittens Covered In Spikes!" Really important note to keep in mind the whole time your read, IT DEPENDS! (Depeche mode voice)  But for the most part this is vary near to fact. So if something upsets you, or you think something is wrong and that I should go jump off a tall building with my lies. Just take a moment and think outside the box about who you are and what you have done in your life, and what I have done with my life and how I have lived. More so WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT IT! (Just Kidding, I'm sure you know something about the music industry) I'm just trying to inform you about the things I know, its up to you to look into them and find the truth for your self. I have been involved in the music world a lot in the last three years, being 21 I know the next three are going to be even bigger. I don't want to even think about how crazy things are going to be in the next ten. I really started my life in Books (as a writer), then as a musician (Keyboardist, Audio Engineer, mixer and master'er lol), Now I'm a Filmmaker. Each time I have been involved in the the marketing and business end of things at some point, AND I HATED EVERY MOMENT OF IT! Why? Its all bull crap! OK I guess it IT DEPENDS. Sometimes it was fun to see things progress and change, as bands I worked hard with achieve great things. Other times it was crap! Over the last 8-10 year the game has changed so much. IT ALL STARTED WITH BOOKS (in death metal voice) Its this whole digital world and era we live in. When Amazon.com kicked into things really changed for what makes money! ONLY 20% of books in the "mass market" make a profet, starting at breaking even. (DAM YOU Twilight) SO what about the billions of books that are out there? Some do ok, but they all hardly make any money. Why? Because really big companies can make/get a lot of these books for almost nothing and sell them for a lot! For this to work these books need to have a huge Target Audience. (Dam you twilight) SOOOOO the only books making money are the ones that are picked up by these companies, and these companies decide who they backup with there marketing. IT one big crazy mess! What dose this have to do with me? Here is the answer Only 10% of hits song/ablums within all points/genres of music make any profit… 90% of everything else is just crap………ok not really but still you get the idea. Hold up lets smash some numbers up before we move on lets say there are only 100 bands in the world!!! And only 20 of then get some fame from world of mouth, and the interwebs! (In the real world this would be more like 10 out of 100, but I'm in a good mood) So these 20 bands go and get signed, 2 say * this, and don't ever get sighed 3 go and sign them self's 5 break up right after getting or just before being signed do to stress, woman, drugs, and car/airplane crashes 10 get sign and get on big time radio 5 are like by the masses, 2 will go down in history the other 5 are seen as a joke and most people dislike them. Or think they are "like everyone else," and no one really give them any heed until they reform/comeback five to ten years later.  Now lets focus on the 5 signed and labeled bands You think they are rolling in money right, IT DEPENDS! Most people who are music producers and marketing producers have no real understandment of music. SAY WHAT? ya I know… it sucks Most… yes, I know about Metallica. But trust me when I say most people at the top of the whole music industry, are just businesses people and number crunchers. Hell top down to the mid level are that way. IT DEPENDS! I bring this up because this means these people are going to try and suck up as much money as they can out of whatever you make!!! You can try and sign some kind of deal to try and make money off they album like a %, but they WILL find away to get most of it. or they just want sign a deal with you. Then how do I make money getting labeled? Well the same why most bands make money, LIVE SHOWS and NETWORKING.  I was working with one band who did even have an EP yet and was making $3,000 on average a show! Biggest was 6000$ and that's just personal profit. It took about $1,000 to run their show for the most part maybe only 1500$ on how big it was. Between you and four other guys that's 600$ a show. and you do like 3 shows a week that's 1,800$ holycrap! that's like 45$/hour based on a 40 hour weekly job. Is that making bank? not really. Is it a living? HELL YES! Just don't use it on drugs and your set for doing what you love for life. How do you make that much money on Live Shows? Easy think of it like this Lets say you worked your butt off on meeting people and talking your way into shows/venues/or people with connects to things like this Then your band with what money you have rent this place for a night, 500 - 600$. You get lots of peoples attention in what ever place your heading, calling people/selling your soul/Website/network and you have people pay about 5$ for some of BEST MUSIC OF THEIR LIVES! you got 300 people in the door and pay, that's 1500$ again this all depends. Like how the hell your going to crew your self? lots of bands do it and make good money on it. Most guys I know that do this (I know about 15-30, all of them not labeled) have a 9 to 5 Job on top of this and do there shows at night. It adds up. But should this stop you from getting on the top charts! (It depends) Even the big timer make most of their money from live shows. MUSE! Pearl Jam! Sevendust! Avenues of Intensity! YOUR MOM! So all you have to do is be smart look at how other big bands made it, and not make the mistakes others did. Plus just take your, good things come to… who am I kidding. Just go in and get the best deal and remember your not going to get everything you want. I will be explain how to get labeled in another part, maybe on part 20 or something of rants. So ya the music world of marketing and Distribution is like being a Gazelle with out eye in the African Savannah. Have fun being eaten, I mean making music, I mean doing drugs, I mean making songs.
