So you bring up a good point...
So most bars and such do have a house PA system but what if your asked to play some where they don't. are you just going to turn down the gig?
Also having your own equipment allows you to control your sound more. And the sound you get a practice is what you'll get at the gig. also it's a good backup option. if your amp ain't loud enough throw a mike in front of it and run it through the PA. The bass can line out to it.
Besides i'm sure you've got a grand or more invested in your guitar and amp. do you really think the singer should get by on a $100 mike?
Guitar center has a small 4 channel pa for about $300 bucks |

Teles got a great point. Turning down gigs is definetly not the best if your wanting to get noticed. |

@ Elliott,
But seriously, check Ebay and Craigslist for some deals and if you see something interesting, google it to get some specs. I don't see why you should pay top dollar if you are footing the bill and your singer isn't able to pay. If you get something decent and your band stays together you can upgrade.

I used to have one of those.....
anyway, you have 2 options for a PA systme
first, you buy a power amp, a mixer and speakers.
Second you buy a mixer with build in power amp and speakers.
A good live mike is the shure SM57 or SM58
I'm not sure where your at but you maybe be able to pick stuff up cheaper 2nd hand like on craigs list or even some local music stores may have used equipment.
but don't go vintage with this.....I used to have a vintage peavey tube pa system and it would shock you if you played your guitar and tried to sing |
