What's the joke?
Anyone else know how they work? I thought the sound came through the amp but there is a mic hooked to the mouth piece. |

Next time your phone rings, hold the speaker up to your mouth and try making different shapes with your mouth. You'll notice that you can do wah wah's and all kinds of other stuff, by "shaping" the sound. The Talk Box uses the same principle. It works something like this:
There's a speaker inside the talk box which sends your guitar sound up the tubing and into your mouth. You use your mouth to shape the sound (If you want to see some really sweet talk-box action, check out Peter Frampton) and then the resulting sound is picked up by the microphone and sent back to your amplifier.

This is what I found on the internet about talk boxes, so pretty much like what Fooger said:
Quote: The talkbox works on the principle of reproducing sound from an amplifier and directing it into the mouth of the performer. The performer's lips and vocal cavities (mouth, throat, and larynx) further modulate and shape the sound. The resulting "talking guitar" output is then fed through a microphone and from there is amplified through the PA system or sent to the recording console of the studio.
One that is reccomended for a lot of people as a first talk box is the Rocktron Banshee, since you don't need a mic or PA, just your guitar and amp. |

Yea I have seen Frampton but Slash mad it sound more like a wah. Your right though Frampton is the man.
"DO YOU FEEL ... LIKE WE DO"
Do you have to make sounds with your mouth or do you simply move it? I was just wondering how it worked. Thanks |

You just move your mouth. If you made sounds they would be picked up by the microphone, and that wouldn't sound very good!
My opinion: If you get a talk-box, you best be using it to talk! The wah wah stuff gets uninteresting pretty quick. Check out Jeff Beck's cover of "She's a Woman". He does a nice job of mixing all the elements of the talk-box on that song.
Definitely go with the Banshee (I think they have a new one out called the Banshee 2 that has some more powerful features). The Heil Talk-Box has a good chance of killing your amplifier. |

Funnily enough, I just found out one of my Jazz inspirations uses a Talk box. Pretty cool. |
