i usually try not to get of topic this is a guitar form after all but i was just wondering if any body has ever written melody and been strangely proud of it only to have some one tell you that you have subcon. stole an other famous song's melody. this has happened at lest ten times to me this week (has happened before not like this through) the funny thing is it is band i don't even listen to or havn't for years like REM

Yep! I wrote one that I thought was really good, but then I realized I ripped it off Metallica.

I'm trying to write an acoustic song now, but I have the strangest feeling that I've heard it somewhere, I just can't place it.

oh hell guys, i am going through that at this very moment. i like the song and i swear it's oringinal but i just can't believe i'm good enough to have come up with it. i'm going to have a friend listen to it in the morning but i know i'm going to have trouble getting to sleep. it's haunting me.

Does anyone remember the song Born Free from the 70's movie about a lion I think? Anyways, play the melody backwards and it's the theme of Starwars. Roger Williams is the composer for both.

It's when your subconscious mind can't come up with melodies at that time and attempts to re-create a melody it has already heard.

Essentially, it's accidental plagiarism.
