line 6?

im thinkin about getting a Line6 spider III 15 watt amp, does any1 have/pr have played one of these? does it have good distortion?

it depends what you want it for, of course.

for performing, i would never, and i mean NEVER, use anything but a decent tube amplifier - unless it is some blow off gig you don't give a flying fuck about. and you'll still need to be loud enough to be heard - 15 watts ain't gonna cut it in a solid state, most likely.

for practicing, it doesn't matter what kind of tone you're getting. only you hear it. you would be better off getting a modeling amp - such as the one you have chosen. for practice, i don't even plug in. but, i have used vox, fender, boss/roland and line 6 modeling amps at different times for practice. and i can tell you without a doubt, Roland cube amps blow line 6 away.

the cube 15x is the same price, speaker, wattage, and is a modeling amp. except, the cube sounds less shitty and is more versatile.

yeah i want it for practicing, kinda looking for an Alexi Laiho distortion

learn to play like him, THEN worry about sounding like him. you aren't going to get a killer tone out of a SS practice amp. not for 100 dollars.

if you wanted to drop serious dollars on a high end low watt amp, you could get a killer tone. the entire album 'cowboys from hell' was recorded on a 10 watt tube amp.

just get the cube. you won't regret it.

Yeah, and when the sound is more than amplifier, its guitar pickups, effectchains and ampheads and cabinets... you cant get the sound what you wish for just choosing onekind of amplifier.

And if im thinking to metalkind of stuff, tone of Tube amps could sound maybe bit too warm and vintage for HC metal needs...just my 2 cents.

I am king of used gear. The only thing i bought new are fx pedals.

I recently picked up the 30 watt vox valvetronix for $100 off craigs list and it's in new condition and came with the foot pedal.

If you shop around some you may find a 2nd had amp that has a little more ball that what you can find new.

And by the way Badudelaire... you did say he should learn how to play like him before getting the same tone. Two people can have a similar tone but different playing styles and vice versa... so no, I won't be making a trip to hell.

I'm going to back Doz and Baudelaire on this one. Go with a Roland Cube of some sort. For $150 you can get a 15w Micro Cube, which are FINE practice amps. I own one and just can't recommend it enough.

I don't know a lot about the Line 6 amps, but if you're looking for a practice amp, Roland Cube amps are the top dogs.

I can't really say which one to get seeing as the only Line-6 I've played was a Spider Valve.

Such hostility. Honestly, Line 6 Valve amps are pretty good.

I have tried the Spider III 15w, and really it's not as bad as people make it out to be. I find that on the web (not so much on this site, but on other sites for sure) people get on a bandwagon and just bash Line 6 (not just Spiders, but even their other products) endlessly, even if they haven't actually tried out the amp.

That being said, I don't think that it's the best amp for the price, since I think the Vox Valvetronix series is much nicer.

But the best thing is for YOU to go into a store and try out all the amps in your price range. Pick the one that YOU like best.

Well line 6 definately not a bad one. If we look for artists who use line 6 products are forexample:
Mick Box (uriah heep),
James Hetfield (metallica),
Mick Thomson who actually use spider (slipknot),
Kirk Hammett (metallica)
Migliore (lacuna coil)
and Lenny Kravitz and so on...

As Skold said, the Line 6 Valve Spider isn't that bad, but I've still heard it's overpriced for what it is, even if it's OK.

Plus... I heard Mick Thomson was *planning* on using it for recording, owns one but didn't actually use it in the end... I'm not sure if that's true but you have to remember - artists sometimes endorse products that they probably don't use. Do you really think Zack Wylde uses an MG for practicing? Nah.

And Empirism: Yeah, Line 6 do have some good amps, just not the Spider.

i had a spider 3 15w. bar none the worst SS amp i've ever heard period.
trust what everyone is saying to stay away from the small line 6 amps.
you will regret it.
