Any tips for playing fast

Im planning to train to play fast, have u any tips for amp setups, picking techniques or any other tips that helps in that.

Yeah, I would be interested as well. Everyone says play slowly, don't pick too fast or it sounds sloppy, but the problem is I just can't get my picking hand to move fast enough!

Ive found that my main problem is the sync between picking and left hand, and when shredding i dun know which one is better use hammer ons or just pick every note.

Scale picking with a metronome is a great way to increase finger speed and also helps get your hands in sync. I did a lesson on it called "Speed, Strength, and Finger Accuracy Exercises" check it out in the lessons section.

depends on what your playing really,but legato(ie combination of hammer ons and pull offs) is usually a faster option.

Finger workouts.

What I have herd is there is a process. You have to go slow at first and build up speed, and work with a metronome. The thing is that your muscles have memory and if you play fast and sloppy your fingers will remember it. remember you want to paly as good fast as you do slow.

This has worked for me....with a few sweep picking and legato excercizes.

I'm not a thrasher but my speed has been increasing.

1 - figure out what that fastest you can play something (scale arpeggio what ever)

2 - set metronome for 50% and play that or few days don't go fater

3 - after a few days bump the speed up by 20% unitl you realh the 90-95% and then go all out.

If you don't spend the time doing it slow then it will not reach the speed goal. once youreack your goal bump up you max speed by 10 or 20% then rinse and repeat.

less motion=more speed, thts all i have to say.

Finger movements, not too sure, but I turn my pick about 45 to 90 degrees to pick faster.

yeah ill try that and great lesson there LP, ive found it also fun way to train scales too in that way, using slow to fast and repeat stuff. Many sectors to train with one style.

oh well, ive crashed to an new problem :)

When ive trained with tempo of 80, ill get bored...darn bored... when ive raised it to 120 ive got no problems to hang on with. When Ive turned it to 160... again ive got no problem to hang with. I understand that I play with "strong notes" and I should play additional note before "strong note", but metronome is not tickin' on that.

In LP's lesson there was example of starting slow 80 and go up to 160 and repeat, but if I feel that I can handle it, what range you suggest me? 160 - 220? Or should I concentrate more for learning scales?

I would work at any temp working quarter notes then eight notes and then sixteenth notes. I can play quarter notes at 220 no problem. but not sure about eight notes at that speed.

with working single notes for speed i'll work the 1/4 notes at first then warm put to 1/8 notes then move on to 1/16. and work on through that with scales and arpeggios etc.

Just use your own judgement with it. If you want to go to 220 with 1/4 notes it's fine. I only put it to 160 in the lesson to make it easier on a beginner. After you can play the scale all the way through with no mistakes 5 times using 1/4 notes at 160 or 220 ( which ever you chose ), then take the metronome back down and start with the 1/8 notes then 1/16 notes. I have done this exercise for a couple of months and it can really clean up your playing, make you faster, and help get your hands in sync with each other.

I generally have a major problem with syncing picking and notes, I usually end up trying to hammer on everything but it doesn't work so what I've done is just worked doing things as fast as I can picking every note, then playing it legato'd and so on

Start real slow, keep it accurate, gradually build up over many months, use a metronome (CRUCIAL!)never move up a notch till you've got it right and DON'T CHEAT!

Now ive been training and lookin lessons a while here and I have one question.

Is it faster to use sweep picking than alternative picking when training to play fast? which one I should consentrate at first.

Ive mean lead, not rythm.
