There is really a lot to music theory, so you are much better off to take it a little at a time.
I think I have a good understanding of how it all works together but at the same time I don't know all the chords in the Dm key. I also Don't know all the triads for all the diffrent chords.
I have been playing a long time too. So understand how keys work and then when you practice take 10 minutes or so and concentrate of the other stuff.
I think your better off to take it a few minutes at a time rather than marathon it. |

Well, as long Im played and still learning. Music theory works for guitar same way than every other instrument, so I think that music theory is theory of music...and that is endless, atleast to me.
Theory of guitar playing have also many sub-genres... like Fingerings, Picking and so on... so I think its kinda big task to learn all the theories :P. I myself study those that help me in current skill. |

Ok, i understand now that is it is too vast to learn to all of music theory, particularly in a short amount of time, so what would you say are the basics and that everyone should learn , for example im currently trying to learn chord contrutions with intervals and everything, what other things will benefit the most in music theory? |

I would say learn simple chord progressions, which scales go over what progressions, how to build chords, which chords go in what key, which notes go to what key. I would say all of this is basic theory. You can get all of this from the lessons below.

To add what Matt said, the most important aspect of learning music theory is applying what you learned. this can be through your own creations musically or even your favorite song by some band. Pick it apart and find what key they are in, what scales they are using.
This can give you one of those "ah ha" moments were it all comes together. |

I learned most of my classical music theory in a class at school, so that was about 9 months (meeting every other day or so). Most of my jazz music theory I've been teaching myself over the past year or so. |
