Peavey Windsor

So I finally got a summer job and gathered some money. I noticed the Valveking was more expensive than the Windsor halfstack. The Windsor halfstack is insanely cheap at $600. Anyways anyone have any experience or comments about this amp. One question: What was the Marshall amp that you guys said had really bad distortion?

The Marshall with the bad distortion is the Marshall MG-Anything.
That's what I hear anyways, never used one.

I've heard the MGs have really bad distortion as well, but I can't speak from experience.

Anyone played a Peavey Windsor?

I haven't, but the MG is awful. I don't own one but I've had quite a bit of experience with it.

$600 is around £300... but prices in England are a litle higher so let's say £350. You probably get what you pay for, which isn't much when your talking half stacks. The Valveking is likely better... but I'm not well educated on the Windsor. Is that price for the Windsor new?

Don't buy the MG man, the clean is alright but dirty and shit it just fails epicly...

Anyone got some advice on a small (10-20Watt maximum) solid-state amp? I'm running on a 10watt MG and i'm hating it, it just makes everything sound so...cruddy and the lack of proper EQ =|

roland 15w cube heard decent things about them for being a practice type amp.

Maybe the Cube 20x? I think it has a bunch of amp models and amp effects and a built in tuner. Should be well under 200, I think. I saw it for about 100 somewhere.

the 20x is on GAK for £89, I was looking at the 30x though 118, worth it? My main thoughts on one the loudness (I need it decent for home and loud for stage/practice) also it's size, I don't have that big a room...

I was asking around about Crate Tube amps about a year ago with some news groups and forums and was directed to try a Peavey instead. The crates suck, but this has been playing peaveys over 10 years said peaveys have really gotten good. I would try one out, whatcha got to loose?

I have a peavey XXL halfstack and it's trash. I would expect the windsor to be similar but that the best advice I can offer. Never had any good experiance with peavey.

Ah, you might want the 30x instead then. I have the 30 (which is like the 30x without tuner). But if you need it for practice that'd be better. How much is the Cube 60 going for these days?

I tried many Peavy 50 watt combo and heads and they sounded good. The Windsor seems hard to find at guitar center. I've heard very good reviews for the valveking. I can afford the Valveking but I heard the Windsor has better ans heavier distortion.

I have an old Peavey Deuce with Fender Celestion speakers, it sounds awesome, and it sounds better the louder it gets. It uses tubes of course and has 2 12's. I'm not sure about the Windsor, but generally Peavey makes quality equipment. The Valveking is pretty good, and from what I've heard so are the JSX's.

Do you guys think buying a good 50 watt is better than an expensive 100 watt(halfstack) I heard that some 50 watt amps are better than their 100 watt versions. I played a 50 watt peavey combo amp(borrowed) for a while and it was really good. I havent tried too many high end Marshalls or others. Basically I need GOOD ORGANIC TUBE DISTORTION and nothing else.

Well, buying a 50 watt combo will get you a better quality amp than if you spend the same money on a 100 watt half stack... unless you buy used or something.

What used 50 watt or 100 watt(halfstack) can I get for under $800?

I wold go with the lower wattage if it's a tube.

The tone most people what is achieved when the amp is maxed out (when it's cranked up) if you get a 100 watt then your not going to really be able to do that much (without pissing off the neighbors)

This is also why the 1, 5, and 15 watts are so desirable, you can cranking them for recording in the bedroom.

I need the loudness for clubs or medium sized rooms. (I've been turned down twice by bands because I dont have an amp) Is a 50 watt enough? I dont want to use PAs or mics.

50 watt is fine for playing most venues. Mine is 120 and I don't turn far past 3 or 4.

50 watt tube should be fine. As tele says, you're going to want to really crank it to get that full tube overdrive sound. 15 watt or lower would be best for practicing in your home and recording... but if you need it for gigs and band rehearsals you'll probably need more power.

Have you already got a practice amp your content with using at home? If so, I'd go for a 50 watt tube if I were you.

Yep I'll take everyones advice into consideration. I'll try out some 50 watt amps.

I have the 50 watt Valve King, its a little more than a year old. I use it for practice at home and I gig with it. The Valve King works great, I play every Sunday in a 300 seat Church and next month we will play in a 1000 seat Church and I probably wont turn it up past 3 or 4. The larger the hall doesn't matter as it gets miced into the PA, which is normal in a concert setting. When we play in a cafe setting with out a PA it will drown out the drummer if I turn it up past 4 or 5. Between practice and playing out the Valve King gets used about 25 - 30 hours a week every week and so far no trouble, the thing is rock solid and has VERY good clean tone.
I don't know about the Windsor but the Vale King is pretty good, and I would buy another if I needed one.
