guitar scales help

hey guys, im starting to learn scales and i found this site { http://www.chordbook.com/guitarscales.php } which shows scales but seems different from the scales here and i could use your advice on which one i should go for on learning, thanks !!!

theyre the same, byt theres more on this site. and on this site its sideways and not up and down which makes it easier

a lot easier.

definatly learn the maj scale and pentatonic. they are the MOST important, most other scales are just variations of them, most 70s and 80s british bands used them. if u dont know the tabs to a 70s/80s solo, and u cant tab it well, just cascade down a pentatonic till one sounds right lol.

ye, i dono much bout scales sides wut my teacher tells me, i asked how many scales are ther, he said many many many. i said are they similar, he says yeh, i say how, he says more form from pentatonic and maj, and it really really helps if u play classic rock to know the pentatonic. if i didnt know bout them, id be half as good as i am now. i say it is a must to memorize at least those 2.

lol i dont think i know the Major scale... just the pentatonic and diatonic.. and im sorta learning the byzantine scales, but im lazy so i dont practice them much

I would work on minor scales. I started trying to learn the major scale and just could not get it down so i skiped to minor (E) and found i just liked it better and found it more fun.

Well, you have a major pentatonic and a minor pentatonic that I reccomend learning first. Then go onto the major and minor scales. No matter what other people may say... it is important to at least know the major scale because it's what other scales are based off. It's a foundation for music theory to work off and will be helpful.

Plus, when you know some patterns in major and minor you can work out where the minor fits relatively to the major and open the fretboard a lot, quite early in your playing.

Does anyone know the Modes and all? I figured people knew all of those...

I'll admit I don't really use them allot, way back in the day, I just learned the Pentatonic and the Melodic Minor, and I had a love affair with the Melodic Minor, I'll admit some times I forget to change it when it descends but not that much anymore.

I would suggest learning that, or at least some of it. It is really good stuff.

Marty Friedman has this weird and beatutiful style that he uses. I have not heard anyone else that sounds like him. He is not insanely fast but he is very expressive.I heard he mixes like a bunch of different scales.
