ive been playing for about 2 months now, and i know i cant yet, but i really want to kinda "shred". in the sense playing fast. not speed picking, but like kinda getting your fingers to go fast. like on the pentonic, and in rock u like a hurricane, the end of the first solo, it does some kinda scale and hits notes very fast down each string. how long did it take you guys to play, or hit notes at tht speed? is ther any type of secret, besides practicing, i do tht a lot, to hit notes tht speed quicker? also lets say i practice songs, but i dont practice nimbleing my fingers up, will the speed eventually come, or will i have to do all those boring excersizes?

Try getting a tab for a fast riff or solo or just practice pentatonics until you master it. Try playing trills. Try not to speed pick.Other than that its potassium

Don't learn your scales in the box position, learn the major scale and then all of it's modes, up and down the entire neck... If you need help with that you can pm me or anyone else here I am sure they'll help.

And I guess potassium certainly wouldn't hurt.

Every three days play scales as fast as you can until you cannot move your fingers. Why three days? because it gives time to heel, then do it again, in time you'll be flyin

how long did it take u guys to "speed finger"? outta curiosity. speed i mean by like the end part of the solo to crazy train, where u go up each sting till u bend the 19th on the e string. also how long did it take u to shred?

Two or three years for speed fingering and shredding which are kind of the same.

^he's your boyfriend? or did you mean Best friend..agh confused!

'Don't goo nearr the watterr chilldren, see all fish dead upon the shoree!'
^Guess the song and Artist! bwhaha!

Speed fingering/shredding hmm? Best advice is just practice something slow and build up, I know quite a lot of fast shredders (Near 280-300bpm anyone?..) and they have a tendency to have screw ups when they go there fastest, but they keep playing and it becomes not noticeable as it's covered over so quickly.
Another idea is think of how you can play the scale, song, riff, whatever with the least movement with the fretting hand, such as if it's playing a C and Em chord, people tend to take the whole hand off the fret and move figuring when you only need to move one finger.

-----
-1---
-----
-2-2-
-2-2-
-----
C Em

See all you need to do is move the finger on the 1st fret off and on, least movement, smoother and faster playing.

Spend some practice time building up finger strength and independence with excersises (all over the net) its a bore and start SLOW and try not to rush it. Work into this alternate picking. It doesn't have to be melodic or coherent but once your fingers DO what you want them to, scales become really easy (as long as u can memorise them!)

my best friend, but he is a bit of a fag lol.

i see what u mean by tht, i try to do tht, also when im speed fingering, i pull off and hammer on everything unless im going to a new string right?

also, i have a prob with trilling: in free bird it does somthing like this:

e--
b--15h18----15h18
g--------17-------17 and so on.

do i keep my 2nd finger on the 17th fret or do i take it off and put it on each time?

peter...stay on topic..im asking about speed fingering, like shredding....which u cant even come close to doing so dont be calling me a grasshopper u centepide!!(or centapede, or w/e, ther the long worm things)

Shredding takes time dont rush it ,it will come.Everything in guitar playing is over whelming at first, but its not, learn as you go ,you will get there my friends, may be a worn phrase but be true to your self and everthing comes in time some faster than other but it will come ,,,,just practice, there are no short cuts .
