Songs are built from progressions of singular notes or chords, or groups of notes or chords. Everyone writes music differently. Just play your instrument, things will come together eventually. Writing music is entirely different from playing music so don't get down on yourself. Writing is a skill on its own and needs to be treated as such. |

Do you know what chords can fit what key?

Nah, songs aren't built on progressions of singular notes or chords. That's what someone thinks from the outside looking in. Songs are actual fragmented phrases that are often deconstructed to its simplist form. Basically they're blurps. |

Can you define fragmented phrases and blurps? |

@Philosopher
Listen to GuitarSlinger-he is 100% on point with his statement. There is no shortcut or formula to write a song-it's all about your soul guiding you through the music.
In short-just play your guitar and don't follow hard rules.
@JRM
This is your opinion. I respect it as such. However-I'm completely lost as to what you write songs like. Please explain what you mean-because I've never said a song is fragmented parts broken down to a more simplistic delivery.
How many songs have you written? Any we can listen to?

I personally would suggest you get some sheet music from the bands you like and study those for structure. Use standard notation.
This requires you know how to read sheet music.
and good luck. :) |

Well, songs can be built from phrases or use other methods as well. Depends on point of view, also there are a program in science, that "calculate" songs, based on rules and databases... anyway...

that is very good to have an idea of this kind of composing style...
other, should I say approaches are Riff based composin, Vocal based composing or even a rhythm based composing to mention few, point is what you keep standing ground of your composing.
well, one of the most talented drummers in a world Neil Peart is said to got an idea of Xanadu's drumsolo from bubbling river (not know the fact, but what ive heard)
Santana once said "I don't play music, music goes only through me", everyone have their own methods to create something from different sources or inspirations or purely by technical means.
