Play by ear

G'Day..I am not one of the fortunite that can play by ear. But I was wondering if anyone knows how to train the ear so music can be payed more flowing.I am learning the scales..actually just started that.I play rthym..so the scales are necessay .But if anyone knows how to train your ear..please please tell me..........Donnea

ive been playing for almost two years and i just got the whole palying by ear thing... just give it time, try to figure out songs by ear, and find every note all over the fret board. it will help you a loooootttttt.

Hey there Old post...I just wanted to let you know that a friend of mine gave me a hint that has worked out well. He said listen for the bass notes. When you hear a song and you want to know the chords listen for the bass player's notes or the lowest notes on the rhythm guitarist. this won't tell you what chord but is a good starting point. Then you might be able to tell if the chord is major minor a 7th ext.

Hey lucky you are right the bass gives it all away,by ear is the only way I know how to play others songs(which I try not to do anymore)But if you can read tabs the person trying to learn the song isnt really learning the whole song because tabs are basically a inturputation of the person writing the tabs,that is really why I gave up trying the tab thing,EX play a tab you heard from a song you know and you'll see what I mean.I'm not cutting down tabs at all,but the person writing the tabs really has to know what they are doing and playing by ear you can hear things that you cant tab.LOL Doz...dude I can go on and on about ear training ....lol.I think ear traing is important but I dont bring it up cause its very hard to explain.

I think... to train your ear, the best thing to do is listen a lot, and try to learn that way, a lot.

idk y but i have a knack to finding a note on the guitar. i can play by ear very easy, i use tabs to perfect it. i think ther r 2 reasons y,
1:i have very good ears, and good ears for music so i hear it and i can play it, i dont know all the notes on the fretboard cause tht takes while and im lazy, which is y tabs r also good.
2:my dad is a pianist so i have been listening 2 music 4 ever. from when i was 2 or 3 i can remember listening to mozart and beethovan and the rest on my dads piano and on the disks he had 2 memorize his music. i guess i just got lucky.

I started playing guitar just by listening to songs then I learned how to play chords. I learned the pentatonic scale from listening to a song. I doubt the person who posted this even cares.Lol

Playing from music or tabs is (arguably) the best way to learn a set piece properly. Having said that, you often can't find music or tabs for a great 'on the fly' solo done by some guitarist who was really on fire at the time, so you have to resort to 'playing by ear'.
One of the finest pieces of kit to be invented to assist in this is the Tascam CDGT guitar trainer. It lets you listen to any piece of music at half is normal tempo, giving you the chance to pick up on those 16ths that you otherwise might have missed.

Hey Deefa, I've got a program that can slow down MP3s, so if I ever need to I can load them into that. And yeah, it makes it easier pick everything out and learn things by ear (which is what I do mostly). As EMB said, I perfect things with tab sometimes.

I haven't quite got into the MP3 side of things yet. Mainly 'cause I run a Linux operating system on my PC rather than windows, and the Linux version of MP3 is Ogg Vorbis which, though comparable in file size and reproduction quality, doesn't have much support ( I can't find an affordable player)so I have to stick with the 'good old' Cd's for the time being!
