this is funny as a recently bought a digitech jam man loop pedal
basically you set the tempo and the time signature. and then you play a riff or an idea, and it plays it back in a continues loop. i mainly use it for post rock ideas as there is a lot od layering in that type of music, something else i like to do (which i DO NOT recommned) is hook up a cheap keyboard to the pedal and run it though a little 15w amp so that i can play all sorts of differnt sounds and loop them into one idea. |

Could it be used to play back a chord progression to write a solo over? |

Yes. I really want to get one soon, but I notice sadly (and happily in the future, lol) that pedals seem to really hold their value well. I looked on craigslist and eBay and they aren't selling for much less than a new pedal, at least for Boss. |

How does the pedal know how long your progession will be?
Thank you.

I am not sure honestly. Others may be able to answer it though. But I do know the Boss pedal comes with a manual to help you know how to use it. I don't know about other manufacturers, but I imagine they do as well. |

It's going to cost at least $150 to get a used Boss or Digitech. Lets say you are trying to get practice over your own loop for a lot less.
You can record your loop, play it into your computer, and loop it in Quicktime or whatever playback program you have.
The loop pedal knows how long you want to loop for because you hit the foot pedal to start and again to stop.

some pedals just hear when you start and when you stop, so thats a pretty cool feature. |

Null: in order to make it loop you can 'You can record your loop, play it into your computer, and loop it in Quicktime or whatever playback program you have.'
