Okay, so I was doing my usual trying to broaden my knowledge of scales and music theory today, when I made a small and startling discovery (to me). The B Dorian scale at the 12th fret is the same shape as the B Mixolydian scale at the 7th fret. While I do have some other questions about this, does anyone have any idea if there is any other scales where this happens? |

If you look they have seven patterns that are the same they just start on different notes.
The B Dorian scale at the 12th fret is the 5th mode in the key of A Major which is E Mixolydian, the B Mixolydian scale at the 7th fret is the 5th mode in the key of E Major which is B Mixolydian.
This all goes back to the Major scale and the seven modes with in it (Ionian/Major, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian/Minor, and Locrian).
No matter what key you are in every major scale will have these patterns they just move according to the key you are playing in. If you aren't familiar with the seven modes of the major scale check out this lesson by Bodom.

The modes are the same pattern, because they're the same scale, just played in different positions. They're the exact same notes, therefor you're bound to find the same position all around the fretboard. |
