Just wondering. That how many of you practise different licks, and use them as soloing instead of practising or improvising scales.
So I wondering, which one could be more efficient way to train soloing. Lets say that if we have practised a huge amount of licks, simple or not, keep attention what note or part of the chord progression is on and play them on different postions. I think it could be even more efficient than practising scales, when it comes to soloing.
Any opinions?

Both are as valid to practise as each other.

My tendency is to practice the scales over and over until I can run through them with both accuracy and speed. When I get to where I think I may be able to improvise off of them, I start to try to find some licks in them. For example: check out my blues scale lick, it may have taken me a long time to fully understand how to do something cool with it, but I finally got it. I do agree with Afro though, both are good to practice with. |

I agree, both are valid. But sometimes you just gotta sit down and play. Don't worry about what the hell you're playing, just shred the crap outta your instrument. For, just plyaing without regard to what Im actaully playing give me a better understanding and respect for what my instrument can do and what i am capable of as a guitar player. For example, recently Ive gotten into a rut where it seems like everything i play is garbage, and usually the only way for me to get out of the rut is to just sit down, close my eyes and shred my ass off-even if i think it sounds bad. because when im done i almost always have more confindence in my abilities as a guitar player. so back to the question, you just goota do whatever works for you man. |

Yeah, Ive practised couple scales over and over and I think I know them quite well in different positions. My problem is that I repeat myself on my solos. Ive found few "favorite" licks myself and I use them very often, even Im not planning to play them, but it just come.
Thats why I wished to ask your opinions, I agree that both are valid, my playing is improved quite a lot, when Im practised scales, but I think I may widen my playing better if I start to practise many licks and improvisate them. If you have good lick sites, feel free to give me a hint. Thanks for the feedback all.
Cheers!

I know exactly what you mean, I sometimes have the same problem. You just gotta catch yourself when you start to play the same licks over and over again. Its tough, but sometimes I have to try very hard and actually think about what it is im playing so i dont get too repeatative. As for licks to use, I think this site is great, there are a lot of awesome licks in the licks section on this site, I's scan through those if i were you. another great site those is cyberfret.com and guitarmasterclass.net. rock on man. |
