Schoenberg's 12 tone method

Forgive me but I am very confused about this. What does this mean?

in a nutshell its writing a song that doesnt repeat the same note.Then you play it backwarss...kinda...i think.

This is heavy duty theory stuff. I tried wrapping my brain around it one time, and I came up with some very ugly aggressive stuff...but never truel used it correctly.

Basically the same thing I was going on about in my topic "The Matrix" The matrix can be used for 12-tone composition (music in the line of Schoenberg, etc).

If you are not into avant-garde music, I wouldn’t botter about this one.

The composer creates a "tone row", which is each of the 12 notes, not arranged in any order, and not repeating. They can then invert it, so a rising major 3rd becomes a falling major 3rd, etc, find the retrograde which is the tone row backwards, and the inverted retrograde which, as its name suggests is the retrograde inverted.

Like JM said, I wouldn't bother with this unless you were really into this kind of thing.

And talking of Matrices, do any of the IT-minded people on here know if it's possible to create a program (in C) to find the inverse of an NxN matrix?

Not that I know of... unless you were making the table, too. If you're trying to make one that's not on the internet, the best thing I'd suggest is the tables on Word or Powerpoint.

Otherwise just use www.musictheory.net and it does it with ease.

No, I meant a matrix, as in an array of numbers, and C as in the programming language. It's a computer science thing. Don't worry about it.

Yeah, I know I build computers. But I still don't think it's possible. I'll give it a go and find out for you.

As far as I know, that can be calculated? yes? Im not familiar with this NxN thing, but that I know there are formulas for it. So when there is formulas for it and there can be done some calculations, it is possible to create a program for it.

I think that these kind of matrices never been found without mathematical thinking, so I believe that they also can be solved with mathematics.

After 12 tone learn "The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization" then you'll be a genius
