I have a 50 watt tube amp. i believe it has 50 watt speakers.

now, if i put some 125 watt speakers in there, will that make it louder and increase clarity and integrity at high volumes?

No. It may have the potential to be more powerful, but you would have to upgrade the electronics too. Otherwise, the lower wattage might actually damage the higher watt speakers. At least that's what I've been told, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

i've heard that before. anyone know a acceptable wattage range to squeeze the most clarity and volume without trashing the speakers?

you might get more clarity and headroom by changing the speakers. If you go from 50 to 65 watt speakers you may get a little more volume.

Does you amp have ext speaker jack? you can use that to hook up another speaker box.

Make sure you match impediance when changing speakers

hah, i use a crate vintage club 50 i had revamped and threw some eurotubes in there. it's amazing. but it has NO features. no jacks but in.

i was hoping it was as simple as putting in some 300 watt speakers in there and all of a sudden all my problems would be solved, but i'm sort of a fucking idiot where things like this are concerned...

You'll get a lot of headroom and won't be able to push your speakers in the way some guitarists like to.

i wouldn't mind the loss of speaker breakup. i really don't like it at all when my speakers start to distort, so thats no problem. once i buy the speakers i'll tell you all how it works out.

a 50 watt tube amp ought to have plenty of punch. What sort of gigs are you playing that need more?

i can't get it loud enough, ever. but i'd really like to be able to keep it at 7.5 instead of 10 and get the same volume with more clarity. clarity at high volumes is really what i'm aiming for.

and i like it LOUD.

i couldn't get a 100w marshall half stack loud enough.

Well, I don't need music for the sake of having music. It makes me feel certain ways, and helps me get my own feelings, aswell as letting me relate to bands and music fans on more levels.

Pure volume for the sake of volume is meaningless. However, if all that you want it for is 'the sake of loudness' then save up your cash, and go grab the biggest, loudest, most powerful amp you can.

My 40 watt tube amp will make your ears bleed if you turn it past 2. I can't imagine needing more.

they aren't bleeding enough, les paul.

the difference between 50 watts and 100 watts is only about 6% more volume. maybe 3 decibels. however, 8x12 speakers will move a lot more air then 4 or 2, and that extra wattage is also stronger sounding, more force to it.

That's not the point though. Something being louder doesn't make it better. Go for tone before wattage, amount of speakers etc.

obviously. but good tone isn't as awesome as good tone that shakes the ground. i've got the tone nailed, now i just want to break windows and deafen people.

buy the loudest PA system you can put a mike in front for your amp and that's it. If you got the tone just reproduce it.

Usually you grow with musically with the people you play with and the gigs you get. If you need more that 50 watt tube you must be gigging at some pretty big places.

naw, my 50w tube amp covers all the gigs just fine. i just like loud things. i really can't afford a mean PA right now, i'd love to have one, though.
