I found this person who is selling a DS 1 for only 40 dollars
What do you think I should do? Buy or not buy?
Would it have a good sound for playing punk rock? |

Boss Delay pedals are probably some of the best for their price. I wish I hadn't spent as much as I did on my DS-6, but oh well. DS-1 has everything you will ever need. Would probably be good for punk, just crank the Reverb and you could get that eerie Dead Kennedy's sound. |

It's actually a distortion pedal, not a delay.
I'd still like to read more replies though. |

Whoops sorry, I was thinking of a different pedal. DS-1 is also an awesome pedal. Steve Vai uses it, for one. |

He doesn't use it often though, he uses it as a solo booster, it give you nice strong highs, but other wise it's not the best.
Crappy Grunge bands like Nirvana, the pixies, sound garden and such use them...
Then again I just don't like pedals, and you might love it, I would try it out first. |

Bah, effects are over-rated. I used to be an effect junky, and now I've sold all of them except my Snarling Dog Wah Pedal and my Moog Ring Modulator, and mostly I just keep the Ring Modulator around because the analog circuitry gives me a nice warm tone. |

I'm not much into effects either.
Especially multi effects pedals.
The sound in them mostly sux.
I wish I could try it out. The person lives in Halifax (I don't live there) but my friend is going there now so I guess he can get it.
Guess if I don't like it I can sell it elsewhere. OR I can go to the guitar shop tomorrow and try it because I think I am anyways |

Yup. A good amp can make a bad guitar sound great. I mean, I've never heard of a case where someone plugged a Les Paul into some shit beginner combo amp, and it sounded awesome. |

I still want some pedals that were previously mentioned:
Ibanez Tube Screamer
Marshal Shred Master
and my choice: DigiTech Death Metal
I think I might get a DS-1 sometime though. It didn't sound too bad.
The MD-2 sounds better though, more versatile. Guess we will see what happens |

Tube Screamer - Stevie Ray Vaughan used this. It has GREAT tone, but Vaughan got his sound by coupling it with Marshall amps. Without a really BIG amp behind it, the sound is kind of small (you can't really go over the top with it). I have a friend who uses them, and bought a second one used so he could get some more umph out of it. I opted for a Boss Blues Driver over this, and I think with a Robert Keeley mod it will really smoke the Tube Screamer.
I haven't played any of the other ones except the DS-1 and the Digitech Death Metal. I think the DS-1 is a really excellent pedal, and though it isn't as gain-y (not a bad thing in my opinion) as some of the other ones, I think it's got a great sound, and I think it's really versatile.
I can't stand the Digitech Death Metal. I don't know about the Metal, but it definitely has the Death part nailed. |

Yup, yup. I personally think that OD pedals sound better on a "dirty" amp (meaning it has distortion on, or another OD/Distortion pedal on). It gives a thicker overdriven tone, something with a little more bite. |

Well I am MAINLY looking for a pedal that is great for punk rock.
My MD-2 Mega Distortion i really like. It seems very versatile, and it's easy to use.

Punk rock doesn't need shitloads of gain. It sounded pretty good when I used it.
And I liked the Death metal, last I remember it was pretty good. Then again that was last year when I was inexperienced with pedals... |

@goodtunes;
I got the BOSS MD2 Mega Distortion instead.
I will get a DS-1 another time
EDIT: ------------------------------------------------------------------
So I got 50 dollars for grading, and I am thinking about going to the store tomorrow and picking up a DS-1 for that 45 dollars.
Would it sound cool if the DS-1 and MD-2 were plugged into each other? |

I dunno. Two distortion pedals in the loop might get a little muddy. Distortion and overdrive together sounds good though. Take your MD-2 in and ask em if you can try it out. I do that at music shops all the time. |

what is the differance between distortion and overdrive?

not alot...A distoriton pedal will have more drive than an overdrive. You can usually take a distortion pedal and lower the amount of drive and get close to the sound of an overdrive pedal. |

Overdrive refers to the tone that tube amps get when their volume is amplified beyond the limit of the tube's. The signal is compressed and clipped off, giving you a square wave shape. This sound tends to be more pleasant and warm. Distortion is usually done with trasistors instead of tubes, so it isn't compressed. It just gets clipped of once it exceeds a certain voltage. This tends to give it a less pleasant sound. If you get a chance, compare a tube amp overdriven to a solid-state amp distorted. You'll hear the difference.
Basically: overdrive = warm, less sharp, more gritty
distortion = gainy, darker tone (not dark like evil) |

OD or Dist? |

I'm a diehard overdrive guy, but it depends a lot on what you're playing. A bit of heat does my guitar good, but I don't need anything really heavy. To my ear, distortion doesn't have the sound I'm looking for. Neither one is necessarily better, but they each have a distinct sound. I can't be certain which one is used most frequently in punk, but a lot of the punk sound comes from the amp being cranked up so loud, so perhaps overdrive? That's my best guess. |
